Talen Horton Tucker

It was reported by Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium that the Los Angeles Lakers and the Utah Jazz had agreed to a trade that will send Talen Horton-Tucker to the Lakers in exchange for point guard Patrick Beverley.

Beverley arrived in Utah in early July as part of the massive trade that sent big Rudy Gobert to the Minnesota Timberwolves, but he would only be there for a few weeks before being traded again.

The 34-year-old Chicago native played 58 games with the Wolves in 2021-22, and he contributed 9.2 points, 4.6 assists, 4.1 boards, and 1.2 steals per game. At 61st in the NBA in FiveThirtyEight’s WAR measure, he received high marks for his play on both sides of the court (5.4).

According to Beverley’s interview with KRIV’s Mark Berman, he wasn’t shocked to be traded to the Jazz because he’s used to being on different teams frequently.

“Surprised? Not in the corporate world, no way. To be honest, you shouldn’t be shocked “The man spoke forward and explained. “Yes, I get it. In the corporate world, you never become personal. We accomplished a lot there in Minnesota. There has been a bit of a makeover done to the atmosphere. Hopefully, we gave the fans something to cheer about.”

Beverley was selected by the Houston Rockets in the second round in 2009, although he didn’t make his NBA debut until the 2012–13 season. He played with the Rockets for five seasons before moving on to the Clippers for four years and then the Wolves for one.

The graduate of Arkansas has played 526 games in his career, averaging 8.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.1 steals. In 2016–17, he was named to the NBA’s All-Defensive First Team because of his outstanding play defending the opposition’s best point guard.

To acquire Beverley would be a safe bet for the Lakers. He is on an expiring one-year, $13 million contract, so there is no long-term investment, and his steady reliability on defense helps up for his offensive slumps (career 41.4% shooting).

With Russell Westbrook’s relocation to Los Angeles, he should take over as Westbrook’s primary backup. With him and Austin Reaves both on the court, the team’s backcourt defense should be rock solid.
