Jessie Bates Contract

The Bengals reduced their roster to 80 players by re-signing Bates and placing fellow safety Brandon Wilson on the Reserve/PUP list, as well as waiving quarterback Drew Plitt. As he heals from an ACL tear, Wilson will sit out the opening four weeks of the regular season.

Bates will be placed on the exempt list, for the time being, allowing the Bengals to keep him off the active roster for up to two weeks. Anytime within the two weeks, he can be activated.

The Cincinnati Bengals are happy to have Jessie Bates back. Bates finally showed up at the Bengals’ facility a day before the club began joint workouts with the Los Angeles Rams. Cincinnati.com’s Kelsey Conway broke the news first.

Bates has been placed on the exempt list and won’t count against the Bengals’ roster for up to two weeks. During that time frame of two weeks, he can be activated whenever he is ready. The Cincinnati Bengals are happy to have Jessie Bates back.

A day before the Bengals and the Los Angeles Rams begin their joint workouts, Bates finally made it to the team’s facilities. The first to report this was Kelsey Conway of Cincinnati.com.

The Bengals have reduced their roster to 80 men by re-signing safety Jerod Bates, putting fellow safety Brandon Wilson on the Reserve/PUP list, and waiving quarterback Drew Plitt. As he heals from an ACL tear, Wilson will sit out the opening four weeks of the regular season.

Bates will be placed on the exempt list, for the time being, allowing the Bengals to keep him off the active roster for up to two weeks. Anytime within the two weeks, he can be activated.

There were rumors that Bates was prepared to sit out the full season if a contract wasn’t struck, but he had so little bargaining power that it was highly doubtful that he would give up his roughly $13 million salary and miss out on 17 games.

Although Bates hasn’t signed his franchise tender yet, his presence here suggests that this is really a formality.

The Bengals can focus on blending in first-round choice Dax Hill with returning safeties Bates and Vonn Bell after receiving their 2020 second-team All-Pro free safety. Hill has been starting in lieu of Bates during the summer and preseason, and he has been fantastic.

Now that Bates is back, at least for the rest of the season, they have a formidable trio of safeties.

Career

In the first quarter, Bates made his first career interception when he picked off a pass intended for wide receiver Michael Crabtree. He returned the ball for a 21-yard gain. In Week 7, the Bengals lost 45-10 against the Kansas City Chiefs, and he recorded a season-high 12 tackles (seven solos).

Bates had six solo tackles, broke up two passes, and scored his first career touchdown in a 37-34 Week 8 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on October 28. Bates returned an interception 21 yards for a touchdown after stealing it from Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston, who was trying to hit the wide receiver, Adam Humphries.

The Cincinnati Bengals announced the dismissal of head coach Marvin Lewis on December 31, 2018, following the team’s 6-10 season. In 2018, as a rookie, he started all 16 games, racking up 111 total tackles (73 solos), 7 pass deflections, 3 interceptions, and 1 touchdown.  According to Pro Football Focus, he is the eleventh best safety in 2018 (with an overall rating of 79.9).
