Even though the Los Angeles Lakers begin training camp in only one week, the Russell Westbrook trade saga shows no signs of ending. Recent reports have indicated that Westbrook will most likely be a member of the Los Angeles Lakers opening night squad for the 2022–23 NBA season. Also, it was reported that Los Angeles kept in communication with the Utah Jazz about possible trades.

It appears like Bojan Bogdanovic is a major target for the Los Angeles Lakers. The sticking point, though, appears to be Utah’s demand that the Jazz includes its 2027 and 2029 first-round picks in any deal including Westbrook. Talks are ongoing, with Jovan Buha and Sam Amick of The Athletic claiming that Los Angeles has lately shown interest in Bogdanovic, Jordan Clarkson, and Malik Beasley.

The Lakers still seem to be lacking in shooting, so adding Bogdanovic, Clarkson, and Beasley makes sense. With the recent signing of Dennis Schroder to a one-year, minimum contract, the Purple and Gold would need to dismiss a player in order to make room for the three players if they subtracted just Westbrook from their roster.

If the 33-year-old Jazz sharpshooter is traded elsewhere before the season begins, reports indicate that the Lakers will give up on their attempts to transfer Westbrook in exchange for him.

L.A. is uninterested in any trade offers for Westbrook outside of what the Jazz have to give. Other NBA teams are also allegedly interested in the 33-year-old shooter.
It’s possible that if Westbrook stays with the Lakers, he’ll be a reserve.

Westbrook’s probable position in L.A. is in question regardless of whether he remains or not because of the team’s crowded backcourt. It has been claimed that Darvin Ham, the team’s head coach, is considering employing the 2017 NBA MVP in a bench role unless Schroder and Patrick Beverley “outplay” him. It is widely assumed that Ham has the full support of the Lakers’ upper management and is free to make difficult choices for the team’s benefit.

Career

The Washington Wizards picked Clarkson with the 46th choice in the 2014 NBA draft, which took place on June 26. Later, he was dealt to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for cash on draft night, and he started playing with the team in the 2014 NBA Summer League. He inked with the Lakers on August 25, 2014.

A significant portion of his first year was spent with the NBA Development League’s Los Angeles D-Fenders rather than with the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers. Yet he went on to start 38 games at point guard for the Lakers, averaging 15.8 points, 5.0 assists, and 4.2 rebounds in those contests. He scored 30 points and dished out seven assists against the Oklahoma City Thunder on March 24, 2015, his finest game of the season.

The first Asian-American starting backcourt in NBA history when they teamed up with Jeremy Lin. Clarkson had a pair of double-doubles on March 30 and April 1. He had such a good season that the NBA put him on the first team of rookies.

There have been only four other second-round picks to make the first team in the previous 30 years. Because of his Filipino ancestry and the Lakers’ established fan base in the Philippines, Clarkson quickly became a popular figure in the country after signing with the NBA franchise.
