As a forward for the Argentinian club River Plate (on loan from Premier League club Manchester City) and the Argentina national team, Julián Alvarez (born January 31, 2000) is an Argentinian professional football player. Typically, he’ll be a striker, but he’s versatile enough to play both forward positions.

Alvarez Scores Six Goals in River Plate Win Updates

A week before his departure to Manchester City, River Plate attacker Julian Alvarez netted six goals in an 8-1 Copa Libertadores rout of Alianza Lima.

After scoring three goals in each half, Alvarez tied Juan Carlos Sanchez’s record of six goals in a Libertadores game set in 1985 when he was playing for Bolivian team Blooming in River’s final Group F encounter of the South American club competition.

River recruited Alvarez in January on a €17 million five-and-and-a-half-year deal, but he remained on loan before joining Manchester City in the summer of this year. Manchester City’s summer preseason trip to the United States is set to include him and fellow new acquisition Erling Haaland from Dortmund.

City chief executive Ferran Soriano said on Wednesday that the chance of Alvarez leaving on loan next season had been minimized “Julian Alvarez has received numerous loan offers from other teams, but he will not be going anywhere.

“He’ll join us for preseason, and I expect he’ll stay. Barcelona? No, Barca was not interested in pursuing this.”

It was in October of last year that Alvarez made his River debut after seven appearances for Argentina since his debut in June of 2021.

Txiki Begiristain, City’s director of football, said of the potential young attacker when City signed him in January “A guy we’ve been keeping tabs on for a while is Julian. One of the best young attacking players in Brazil, we feel, can play in a wide range of positions.

“Bringing him to Manchester City has made me very happy. I am confident that we can help him reach his full potential and establish himself as one of the game’s elite.”

Career

He made his debut in the Copa Libertadores final against Boca Juniors late in the second leg of the 2018 championships. A 3–0 league triumph over Independiente was Alvarez’s first goal as a senior, which he scored on March 17th. He scored in River Plate’s 3–0 victory over Central Córdoba in the Copa Argentina Final in December, clinching the cup for River. When it came to the Copa Libertadores group stage in 2020, Alvarez scored five times in six games for Chile.

Upon turning the age of 22, he signed a five-and-a-half-year contract with Premier League club Manchester City, but he would remain on loan at River Plate until the season’s end on January 31, 2022.

The Copa Libertadores game between River Plate and Alianza Lima, in which Alvarez scored six goals in, occurred on May 25, 2022, while Alvarez was on loan at River Plate.

To prepare for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Alvarez was selected by the Argentina U20s to practice against the senior side. Alvarez was selected for the 2019 South American U-20 Championship in December.

For the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup in May, Fernando Batista called him up. In Poland, he played four games and scored one goal in a win over South Africa. A month later in September, Batista called him up to Argentina’s U23 squad and selected him for the 2020 CONMEBOL Pre-Olympic Tournament, which Argentina won with a single goal (against Venezuela) from Alvarez in seven games.

A World Cup qualifier against Chile on June 3, 2021, was the day of his debut for the Argentina national football team. In the 62nd minute, he came on to replace  Di Mara. In a 1-1 tie with Ecuador on March 29, 2022, he netted his first international goal.
