Leonard was born and reared in Dallas, Texas, and graduated from Lake Highlands High School in 1990. He attended the University of Texas in Austin, where he was a 1994 NCAA champion in the men’s singles competitions. As a result, he has crowned the 1992 US Champion.

In 1993 and 1994, he was a two-time All-American as an amateur. In 1994, he received the Haskins Award for the best collegiate golfer. Only three other golfers, Gary Hallberg, Scott Verplank, and Phil Mickelson, had gone straight from college to the PGA Tour without going through Q School.

For 24 weeks in 1998 and 1999, he was among the top 10 in the Official World Golf Ranking.  At the 1999 Open Championship and the 2004 PGA Championship, Leonard missed out on major championship victories due to bogeys on the final hole.

In 1997, 1999, and 2008, Leonard was a member of the United States Ryder Cup team. Leonard’s birdie putt on the 17th hole in 1999 completed a stunning comeback by the United States team on the final day. When other American players, their spouses, and a few spectators ran onto the green following Leonard’s putt, Leonard’s opponent José Maria Olazábal still had an opportunity to match Leonard on the hole. The triumph was slightly overshadowed by this celebration.

After failing to qualify for the FedEx Cup in 2015–16 despite using his career money list exemption, Leonard entered the 2016–17 season as a previous winner.
