Chris Fowler for the network’s most important college football broadcasts, including the College Football Playoff, is well-known to the sports-viewing public. After calling a few “Monday Night Football” games with Fowler  Herbstreit was hired by Amazon alongside Michaels for “TNF,” marking the first time Herbstreit has had a weekly NFL assignment.

The first regular season game for Herbstreit and Michaels in Amazon’s booth was Thursday’s showdown between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Los Angeles Chargers. They had a dress rehearsal on August 25 during a preseason game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Houston Texans. While Michaels has been a fixture in the NFL.

Herbstreit was slated to take over for Jon Gruden on the first night of NFL Draft coverage after Gruden returned to the Raiders in Oakland (now Las Vegas). Herbstreit and his fellow GameDay commentators shifted to ABC’s coverage after the network acquired rights to telecast the first two nights of the Draft.

Herbstreit, along with Chris Fowler in 2020, will call the opening game of the Monday Night Football Kickoff Week doubleheader. The Saints and the Raiders game was the first NFL game ever played in Las Vegas, and to commemorate Monday Night Football’s 50th anniversary,

Herbstreit and Rece Davis put together a special Monday Night Football Mega Cast the following week. Once again, Fowler and Herbstreit called the opening game of a Monday Night Football doubleheader in 2022, and this time it was the final week of the regular season.

Herbstreit replaced Al Michaels as the color commentator for NFL games on Thursday Night Football on Prime Video on March 23, 2022.

On the same day that he began working for Amazon covering the NFL, Herbstreit agreed to an extension of his contract that would allow him to continue working for the network on NFL-related programming like GameDay, Saturday Night Football, and the NFL Draft.
