Shaquem Griffin Retirement

Linebacker Shaquem Griffin announced his retirement from the NFL on Wednesday, writing for The Players’ Tribune that he’s looking forward to assisting others as part of the NFL Legends Community.

At age 4, Griffin had his left hand amputated due to a congenital ailment called amniotic band syndrome. In 2018, the Seattle Seahawks drafted Griffin in the fifth round, making him the first player with one hand to be drafted in the modern era of the NFL. They were reunited with their twin brother Shaquill, who at the time was the starting left cornerback for the Seahawks.

The NFL honored Griffin on his retirement, stating that he is “a real inspiration.” The day after Shaquem Griffin was dismissed by the Seahawks in 2020, he said his brother stayed with him and they didn’t go to practice. This was revealed on Wednesday. How people would think of him was his main concern.

“I didn’t want anyone to be thinking, “Oh no, they let go of the one-handed player.” I don’t do sympathy, man. To be a pity for me is something I really dislike “He put pen to paper. “But at no point did I ever assume that it was it for me in the NFL.”

After starting the season on waivers, 27-year-old Griffin was signed to the Seahawks practice squad and eventually elevated to Seattle’s active roster. He appeared in 46 games with the Seahawks in three seasons and recorded nine tackles, three quarterback hits, and a sack.

In the 2019 divisional round, Griffin also had a sack of Aaron Rodgers, culminating in the unforgettable sight of Shaquem bringing down the Green Bay Packers quarterback just before Shaquill arrived, and the brothers celebrating together afterward. The Seahawks thanked Griffin on his retirement Wednesday and tweeted: “Your journey will be known for centuries.”

Last year, he joined the Dolphins as a free agent, but he was cut before the season began. After that, he had tryouts with a few more clubs, but on Wednesday, he said he concluded he’d only be happy playing in the NFL with his brother, who was a free agent last year and is now with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“I had tryouts with the Cardinals, Titans, and Jets, then afterward heard from Buffalo, Dallas, and Atlanta. I had a revelation after the Jets training. I didn’t sign up for all this moving around, trying out for different teams, trying to fit in, trying to stay in the game. So much good had come from playing football; now all I wanted was to reunite with my brother on the field “That’s what he had penned, after all.

In his Players’ Tribune column, he admitted that football was always his backup plan. Griffin said his father always emphasized the importance of getting an education and using that knowledge to make a difference in the world as “Plan A” for the two of them.

According to Griffin, after talking to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and other former players in the NFL Legends Community at the Super Bowl, he recognized the good impact he can have on the lives of others.

A positive impact on others is something he is aware of, he wrote. “I’m sharing my message of believing in oneself and working relentlessly to achieve your goals at schools of all levels, with football teams, and even at business events in the United States. Companies are eager to hear my advice, but I have more to learn from them than they do from me. This is totally insane.”
