Last season, the Dallas Mavericks dealt Kristaps Porzingis to the Washington Wizards before the NBA trade deadline, ending the partnership between Luka Doncic and Porzingis. Before the start of the Mavs and Wizards game on Thursday, the two did meet up, and Doncic revealed after the game what small story he shared with his former teammate.
“I talked to him. He has a nice beard.”
The pair played two complete seasons together from 2019 to 2021 because Porzingis missed all of Doncic’s rookie season in 2018–19 due to an ACL injury. Luka Doncic, Kristaps Porzingis, and the Mavs took the Los Angeles Clippers to six games before losing in the 2020 playoffs in the Orlando bubble. Doncic scored 40 points in a triple-double during that stretch, and Porzingis, the team’s second star, was also performing admirably.
However, Porzingis was sent off in Game 1 after a fight with Marcus Morris Sr. of the Clippers. Despite losing Game 3 of the series, Porzingis recorded 34 points and 13 rebounds. However, he would tear his meniscus and have to miss the rest of that series.
The Mavs faced the Clippers again in the first round the following year and even held a 2-0 series lead after winning both games on the Clippers’ home court. However, the Clippers came back and ultimately won the series in seven games. While Porzingis struggled in that series, Doncic continued his spectacular play, raising concerns about how strong the Doncic/Porzingis tandem may be.
