Luke Kornet

According to a league source, the Celtics are re-signing Luke Kornet on a partially guaranteed two-year contract for the veteran’s minimum. The first to report Kornet’s comeback was Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports.

The 7-foot-2 big was signed by Boston at the trade deadline and appeared in 12 games last season, averaging 2.0 points and 1.9 rebounds per outing.

Adding Kornet to Boston’s 15-man roster boosts the number of current players to 11. According to a league source, restricted free agency forward Sam Hauser, who became a restricted free agent earlier this week after Boston declined his team option, is also expected to re-sign with Boston on a long-term basis next week.

if the kernel is able to make the club out of training camp in October, he will be a depth player for Boston After being acquired by the Celtics from the Chicago Bulls, he also played for them in 2020-21.

As per team policy, no specifics on the contract have been made public, but it is assumed to be for the bare minimum and, according to Celtics Blog’s Keith Smith, will not disqualify the team from pursuing another reserve big man for the team, which still has many open roster spaces to fill.

A few times during the 2021-22 season, Boston deployed Kornet, a Vanderbilt product, but the rebounder and shot-blocker were able to provide regular, competent contributions when his name was called.

To put that into perspective, last year he played in 82 games for the Celtics and averaged just over two points and two boards per outing.
