4 Kentucky

In the opening match of the Champions Classic on Tuesday night, the unranked Michigan State Spartans stunned the #4 Kentucky Wildcats by defeating them in double overtime. Although it’s still early in the season, Michigan State may look back on this victory as a pivotal one. The most well-known Michigan State basketball player of all time, Magic Earvin Johnson, took to Twitter to discuss the thrilling victory after the game.

“Super victory for my MSU Spartans vs Kentucky Wildcats, who are ranked fourth! He tweeted, “@MSU Basketball.  Both at the conclusion of regulation and in the first overtime, the Spartans required baskets to keep the game alive. The second one demonstrated Tom Izzo’s brilliance as a coach.

With 7.6 seconds left, Michigan State was inbounding the ball underneath their basket while down 71-69. Not only did they succeed in forcing double overtime, but Malik Hall also scored a dunk for them.

o Michigan State’s thrilling

Four Michigan State players finished in double figures, including Hall. On 7 of 11 shots, he made 20 points. Joey Hauser scored 23 points to lead the squad. Meanwhile, Oscar Tshiebwe’s return to Kentucky was derailed. Due to off-season knee surgery, it was unclear how many minutes the NCAA Player of the Year from the previous season would be able to play.

Tshiebwe didn’t let us down. In the defeat, he finished with 22 points, 18 rebounds, and four blocks while controlling the paint for most of the contest. He fouled out, though, late in the first overtime. The Spartans increased their lead as the Wildcats struggled to get decent looks without him on the court. If the outcome of this game is any indication, Michigan State should be ranked the following week.
