Martial Injury

Anthony Martial, a forward for Manchester United, has been sidelined again as the club gets ready for Saturday’s Premier League noon kickoff against Southampton.

United will travel to the south coast to face Saints, who are coming off a stunning win away at Leicester City and a midweek Carabao Cup victory.

Casemiro, a Brazilian defensive midfielder, signed this week from Real Madrid and was introduced to the supporters before Saturday’s game against Liverpool.

Liverpool, who controlled possession against Manchester United but lost because Erik ten Hag’s team made them pay when it mattered, face a new kind of danger from Southampton.

And Ten Hag has offered some more disheartening news on the availability of Martial, as the forward has sustained yet another injury. During his news conference, the Dutch coach said that the striker has damaged his Achilles and would miss Saturday’s game against Southampton.

United’s boss has stated that he expects Martial to return for the following weekend’s match against Leicester at the King Power Stadium. At his press conference, Ten Hag did share some positive information, saying that Casemiro has trained with the team and is ready to make his debut against the Saints.

Facundo Pellistri and Victor Lindelof are still presumed to be missing. Earlier this month, the former took a hit, and Pellistri injured his ankle in the preseason, putting him out until September.

No improvement has been made with the injuries of Brandon Williams, Axel Tuanzebe, or Phil Jones. There is no way to predict when they will get back.

Against Chelsea at Old Trafford to kick off the 2019-20 Premier League season, Martial started for Manchester United and scored the club’s second goal. When United played Wolverhampton Wanderers on the road for their second encounter, he scored both goals in a 1-1 draw on August 19, 2019.

Martial scored the game-winning penalty in late October against Partizan Belgrade, his first start since returning from injury in August, and then scored again in the following weekend’s 3-1 win over Norwich City.

It was a 3-0 home win against Sheffield United on June 24, 2020, when he scored his first hat trick as a senior. Since Robin van Persie scored a hat trick on April 22, 2013, against Aston Villa, en route to United’s most recent Premier League title, no other player for United has scored a hat trick in the Premier League.

During United’s 1-6 Premier League loss to Tottenham Hotspur, Martial was sent off for the first time in his career when he made a dangerous challenge on Erik Lamela. He was then suspended for three games within the country.

Martial scored his first goal of the season in United’s 5-0 rout of RB Leipzig in the fourth minute of the 28th match of the UEFA Champions League group stage. On December 17, 2020, in a 3-2 road win against Sheffield United, he scored his first league goal of the season. In United’s 9-0 home triumph over Southampton on 2 February 2021, he scored both goals (and was the game’s sole multiple-goal scorer).
