Mark Stoops

On Saturday night, Mark Stoops led Kentucky to a 26-16 victory over No. 12 Florida, a performance worthy of everything he has built in Lexington and a win that moved Stoops over Paul “Bear” Bryant into the position of the winningest coach in school history.

The 20th-ranked Wildcats beat the Florida Gators for the second straight season, the first time that has happened since 1976-1977, thanks to a stout defence that stifled Gators quarterback Anthony Richardson. In a series that Florida used to dominate, Kentucky has won three of the last five games.

However, under Stoops’s leadership for the past five seasons, Kentucky has been the more consistent programme. He has led the Wildcats to 61 victories in his first decade at the helm.

I’m happy it’s here,” Stoops remarked of the documenting event. It’s been a team effort, and we needed this win. We couldn’t have won as many games or remained in the conference as long as we have without a lot of individuals doing a lot of good things and being devoted to our goals.

On Saturday, the Wildcats trailed 16-13 at the break before mounting a comeback victory. In the second half, the Wildcats shut down Florida’s offence, preventing Richardson from making any of the game-changing plays he did in Arizona’s shocking victory over Utah a week earlier.

In addition to his 14 completions out of 35 attempts for 143 yards, 0 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions, Richardson was only allowed 6 carries for a loss of -4 yards. In last week’s 29-26 victory over the Utes, Richardson was responsible for three touchdowns.

Research by ESPN Stats & Information shows that Richardson was 9 of 22 for 44 yards and two interceptions on passes thrown 10 yards or less downfield. Florida’s quarterbacks haven’t had a worse success rate on such throws than 40.9% since Treon Harris in 2015 when he finished at 40% versus Georgia.

Anthony “can do things better,” Florida coach Billy Napier said. We made mistakes tonight; Anthony made mistakes; I made mistakes, but one thing I know about Anthony is that he’s a fighter; he’ll show back up, and he’ll work hard to better; he has that level of investment and devotion to the players and the people in the organisation.

On the other hand, the Kentucky defence did more than just halt Richardson’s rushing attempts. The Wildcats eventually won thanks to a touchdown scored by Kidron Smith, who returned an interception 65 yards for a score.

According to Smith, the team was ready to take on the Florida Gators at their home turf of the Swamp and come out on top. Anthony Richardson was not involved in any way.

The media’s labelling of Kentucky as “soft” earlier in the week served as additional inspiration for the Wildcats’ victory over the Gators. Coach Mark Stoops addressed the issue head-on, saying, “You got to be a tough son of a B to come into this environment and win. We all understand that, and we know this team is built that way. We’ve shown that through the years. That’s who we are.”

The offensive line improved in the second half, allowing Kentucky quarterback Will Levis to complete 13 of 24 passes for 177 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Kavosiey Smoke benefited from the ensuing momentum, rushing for 80 yards. The Wildcats’ powerful ground attack in the second half was all they needed because the defence had effectively stopped Florida. According to Levis, the team’s motivation was a desire to give Coach Stoops his 300th career win.

Despite the fact that the Gators were the higher-ranked team on Saturday night after their victory over Utah last week vaulted them from unranked to No. 12, Stoops couldn’t resist one last jab after the game.

“This building was booming and we had just come off a great win, so heck, I guess now we’d have to climb into the top 10,” Stoops remarked.
