Mikel Arteta said that Martin Odegaard, Arsenal’s captain, will need to be evaluated after he was taken off in the second half of their hard-fought victory over Aston Villa.
The Villa player John McGinn gave Odegaard a “harsh” challenge, according to Arteta. After 68 minutes, McGinn was cautioned for his tackle, and Odegaard was taken off and replaced by Emile Smith Rowe.
After the game, Arteta was quoted as saying, “He was in pain, let’s analyze him but he felt pain from that challenge.” It comes on the same day that Mohamed Elneny, who was also injured against Fulham, was ruled out for a significant amount of time, and Thomas Partey, who has been dealing with a muscle issue, is still having difficulty playing.
Despite losing Odegaard, Arsenal was able to regain the lead against Villa thanks to Gabriel Martinelli’s game-winning goal in minute 77. Gabriel Jesus scored the game’s first goal in the first half when he buried a rebound from a deflected Grant Xhaka cross.

Yeah, he got a bad kick as you could see and he was struggling. https://t.co/kigpkZP2oR

Douglas Luiz scored Villa’s equalizer directly off a corner kick for the third time in as many weeks as the team rallied. The latest victims to fall to the Brazilian’s sleight of the foot are Arsenal, who have already been beaten by Walsall and Bolton in the Carabao Cup.
The Arsenal goal was given despite Aaron Ramsdale’s protests of an apparent foul by Ollie Watkins, who was blocking the goalie’s view. Villa’s celebrations, fortunately for Arsenal, didn’t last long. Just three minutes later, the Gunners regained the lead as Martinelli finished off a move started by Bukayo Saka with a shot into the upper left corner of the net.
With this triumph, Arsenal has now won five straight games to open the season and is two points clear of Manchester City in the Premier League table. Arteta made the following statement “We played our best half of the season in the first half and easily could have scored three, four, or five goals, therefore we’re ecstatic with the result.
“When it came to the second half of the game, we decided to leave the game alive and not end it. It was a back-and-forth game for a while, but we held them to just one shot on goal and one corner kick from which they scored. We responded with two goals, though, and I believe we deserved to win.”

When asked about Arsenal’s recent success, he said the following “Tonight’s game could have gone either way, so the team had to have the resources, resiliency, and spirit to pull out a victory.
For the upcoming match, he said, “We prepare for the next one, we go to Old Trafford [on Sunday] and put in a performance, play well, and earn the right to win the game.”
at the Emirates Stadium, Odegaard scored a goal from 30 yards out in a matchup with Brighton & Hove Albion. His late, long-range attempt was little more than a consolation in the 2-1 loss.
As a result of their lackluster season, Arsenal finished in fifth place in the Premier League, missing out on a spot in the following year’s Champions League. Since his return to the English club at the start of the season, Odegaard has appeared in every Premier League game.
Two other players, Granit Xhaka and the recently acquired Gabriel Jesus will serve as his vice-captains. In Arsenal’s season opener at Selhurst Park against Crystal Palace, Odegaard would make his debut appearance and the team would go on to win 2-0 thanks to goals from Gabriel Martinelli and an own goal by Marc Guéhi. Odegaard scored twice in the opening 11 minutes of an away win against AFC Bournemouth on August 21, 2022.
