Mike Williams Injury

On Wednesday, after the Chargers finished the individual drills portion of their practice and reporters were allowed to watch, injured wide receiver Keenan Allen warmed up with his teammates, caught a couple of catches, and then sprinted easily along the sideline.

To put it another way, those were Allen’s first hesitant steps toward playing his first game since injuring his hamstring in the Chargers’ season-opening victory over the Las Vegas Raiders on September 11 at SoFi Stadium. It’s unclear if he’ll suit on Monday against the Denver Broncos.

Chargers head coach Brandon Staley said before practice, “He’s still day to day, but he’ll be out there in individual (drills) and he’ll be able to test it out and see how things are going. At the very least, “he’s been feeling better and he’ll be able to get out there in his helmet and do some football stuff.”

Since Allen has missed the last four games, the Chargers offense could have gone off the tracks if Mike Williams hadn’t stepped up to the plate so quickly. In the last two games, both of which the team won, Williams has become Justin Herbert’s primary target.

Williams had a great day Sunday, catching a season-high 10 passes for 134 yards as the Chargers beat the Cleveland Browns. This came after he had seven receptions for 120 yards in the Chargers’ win over the Houston Texans the previous week. He has 28 receptions for 392 yards and two scores.

On Sunday, it looked like Williams caught a 22-yard touchdown throw from Herbert in the third quarter, but a video review decided that Williams’ heel was out of bounds as he pulled in the past, overturning the initial on-field call. Whatever the case may be, Austin Ekeler punched it in on the next play with a run.

Later, with the Chargers’ advantage down to one point (at 30-28), Herbert attempted a pass to Williams on fourth-and-one from his team’s 46. Williams ran a perfect route, and Herbert made a perfect pass, but Cleveland defensive back Martin Emerson Jr. intercepted it at the last second.

Without Allen, a five-time Pro Bowler, Williams emerged as the starting wideout. He may have won the game-deciding touchdown if he had caught the ball. However, the Browns had the play completely covered.

Finally, the Chargers won 30-28 to go to 3-2 and get past the.500 mark. If Williams weren’t on the team, where would the Chargers be going into Week 6? Without a doubt, he has made a huge difference in Allen’s absence, although he missed practice on Wednesday due to an illness that is not considered to be significant. There will be no practice for the Chargers on Thursday, but they will be back at it on Friday.

Staley remarked, “You can’t minimize it,” in reference to Williams’ impact. When you lose a player of Keenan Allen’s caliber, it’s difficult to replace their production, especially when media attention tends to focus on a single individual. That’s why it’s crucial that we can run the ball, maintain our balance, and make sure the defense has to account for everyone.

When Mike touches the ball, and we have multiple ways to get to him, we’re at our best as a team. To my mind, that’s exactly what we’ve accomplished. Truth be told, he’s just playing exceptionally well. He’s making progress now. Just keep working on those improvements, and he’ll see (positive) results before long.
