Mikhail Sergachev Contract

By signing restricted free agents now, the Tampa Bay Lightning are already ahead of schedule in their pursuit of free agents in 2023. Defender Mikhail Sergachev has extended his contract with Lightning for a further eight years at an average annual salary of $8.5 million. Ahead of us is a decade!

An agency change was reported shortly after the draught, with Sergachev signing with Dan Milstein’s Gold Star Sports Management. However, Milstein also has a few North American clients among his Russian and Eastern European NHL players.

He also represents Nikita Kucherov and Andrei Vasilevskiy, who both signed contract extensions a year before they became restricted free agents for the final time in their careers. That’s why it felt like Sergachev was going to move in the same direction.

While playing for the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League, Sergachev was selected ninth overall in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft by Montreal Canadiens. He was sent back to Windsor by the Canadiens for another season, but he appeared in four games for them in the NHL.

The Lightning traded forward Jonathan Drouin for Sergei Sergachev in the summer of 2013. Because Sergachev played enough games as a rookie in 2017-18, the deal worked out to be one-for-one and the Lightning came out on top.

There is no doubt in my mind that the acquisition of Sergei Sergachev is an excellent acquisition for the Penguins. However, the improvement in his defensive game and the development of a more responsible, well-rounded defenseman have helped Sergachev take a step back in terms of offensive production in the past few seasons. It’s not necessary for him to be at the top of the depth chart, but he’s more than capable of filling in and seizing the reins when necessary.

There are only a few weeks left in Sergachev’s 24-year-old career. He’s been with the Lightning for five seasons and has two Stanley Cups to his credit, so he should be much older than he is. When this deal expires, he’ll be 32 years old, and he’ll be eligible to sign a new one. His prime years and a little more are being given to Lightning.

That’s a pricey $8.5 million investment, though. Some of the longer-term RFA contracts have proved more difficult to estimate. Even if Charlie McAvoy and Zach Werenski have similar contracts, Sergachev is not exactly at the same level as those two players. In addition, while the cap has been stagnant due to the pandemic, it is believed that players will make up the gap in income in the next couple of seasons and the wage cap might climb dramatically in just the first year or two of Sergachev’s deal.

Mikhail Sergachev Contract

When Victor Hedman’s contract was signed for $7.875 million, it was a bargain, and now Sergei Sergachev’s contract will appear like a bargain, too, if it continues to climb in value. When it comes to the 2023-24 salary cap, Lightning still has a lot to deal with. However, Julien BriseBois’ decision to part ways with Ryan McDonagh is understandable given the impending release of these significant RFA figures.

Sergachev will be here to stay. He has a nine-year extension on his deal. Because of his success in Tampa Bay thus far, he now has the remainder of his peak years to continue honing his craft. He’s only 24 years old, so his finest hockey days are yet ahead of him. For most hockey players, their career peaks at the age of 25, after which they begin to decline. Because of Sergachev’s exceptional skill set, there’s every reason to expect that he’ll remain a tremendously talented defenseman for the duration of this contract.
