Kellen Mond Contract

QB Kellen Mond has been waived by the Minnesota Vikings, while QB Sean Mannion’s contract has been officially terminated, the team announced on Tuesday. The Vikings’ acquisition of quarterback Nick Mullens from the Las Vegas Raiders last week all but clinched Mond’s destiny. Signing Mond to the team’s practice squad later this week is a distinct possibility but not a certainty.

Drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the third round in 2021, Mond never felt at home there. During last year’s training camp, he tested positive for COVID-19, delaying his progress to the point where the Vikings had to sign Mannion as Kirk Cousins’ backup before the season even began.

After Cousins was ruled out for Week 17’s game against the Green Bay Packers due to COVID-19, coach Mike Zimmer opted to select backup quarterback Kyle Mannion and stated that he had no desire to see Mond play in a regular season game.

Mond had a second chance under new coach Kevin O’Connell, but he was too erratic to be relied on as the team’s backup quarterback. Mond completed 29 of 51 passes for 303 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions in his 48 preseason snaps, which is around half of the total snaps the Vikings took. He was credited with five sacks.

The 2022 National Football League season will begin a week from Thursday, September 6th, when the Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams visit the Buffalo Bills (8:20 p.m. ET, NBC).

By Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET, teams have to reduce their rosters to 53 players. For the 17-game regular season, clubs made their final cuts after playing their final preseason game on Sunday.

Notable players who were released include wide receiver Josh Gordon (Chiefs), running back Marlon Mack (Texans), and quarterback Kellen Mond (Vikings). Both cornerbacks Byron Jones of the Miami Dolphins and Tre’Davious White of the Buffalo Bills have been placed on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list and will miss the next four games.

Those who begin the year on the PUP list are not included in the maximum 53-man roster. Indianapolis Colts activated linebacker Shaquille Leonard off of the PUP list Monday, giving hope of a fast return. In addition, there have been a number of roster-adjusting deals this week. The moves will be recorded in our preseason trade tracker.
