In the days coming up to the Steelers’ season opener against the Bengals, Mitchell Trubisky won a prestigious award. Along with second-year running back Najee Harris, Trubisky has been picked as one of the Steelers’ offensive captains. T.J. Watt and Cameron Heyward are the defensive captains, while Miles Killebrew is the special team’s leader.
Although he has only been in Pittsburgh for a short period, Trubisky has already shown tremendous growth as a leader. He is still the starting quarterback for the Steelers despite the success of rookie Kenny Pickett this summer.
Despite the fact that Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has not yet named a starting quarterback for Sunday’s game against the Bengals, Trubisky was listed as the team’s starting quarterback on Monday’s first depth chart of the regular season.
During the final week of camp, Harris remarked that Trubisky “had grown a lot.” “To put it simply, he understands people. I can tell you that he is a competitor. It’s a must-have quality for a quarterback, though. You seek a rival, and he certainly qualifies.”
On Monday, Trubisky stated it was an honor to serve as a captain for the Steelers (h/t Ray Fittipaldo of the Post-Gazette). However, he did not reveal whether or not he has been handed the starting position.

When asked if he will start against the Bengals, Trubisky responded with a smile and “You can assume anything you want,” as reported by Mark Kaboly of The Athletic. “It will be announced when it is announced, but you won’t be hearing it from me first. The two of us are simply going about our day.”
Last Sunday, in Pittsburgh’s preseason finale against the Lions, Trubisky argued that he should start the regular season as the Steelers quarterback. After both teams settled for field goals to start the game, Trubisky finally put together a scoring drive before halftime, passing for 92 yards on six plays to Steven Sims.
Two further passes were completed on this drive, one to tight end Pat Freiermuth for 32 yards and the other to rookie receiver George Pickens for 22 yards. A field goal was made possible by a beautiful pass from Trubisky to Diontae Johnson that covered 38 yards and ended the first half.
It was crucial to get into a groove and put up some points, Trubisky said of the two-minute drive. “We’ll study our early field goal success with regret, as we would have preferred to score more touchdowns. And I believe that scoring a touchdown, in the end, was crucial. It felt great to come out and put in a half. My impression is that we established a more steady cadence.”
The players and coaches in Pittsburgh have benefited greatly from Trubisky’s presence and from the tangible and intangible qualities he brings to the team. Ben Roethlisberger, a former quarterback for the Steelers, has lately stated that Trubisky should start over Pickett.

Roethlisberger noted on his podcast that he believes “nearly all rookie quarterbacks,” benefit from spending time learning from a seasoned quarterback. “Moreover, I believe that Mitch is an excellent leader, a talented football player, an excellent athlete, and a competent quarterback.
I think he’s here to act as a mentor to Kenny, and I think it will do a lot of good for both of them. For the time being, however, I think Mitch should be in charge. Mitch should stay in the game if he performs well. Just because Mitch has a horrible game doesn’t mean you should immediately bench him.”
As reported by ESPN, Trubisky has agreed to a $2.5 million one-year contract with the Buffalo Bills. Trubisky claimed he joined with the Bills to back up Josh Allen and learn from the same coaching staff that turned Allen into a potential MVP contender because no other clubs were interested in giving him a starting role.
In Week 3, the Bills blew out the Washington Football Team, and that’s when rookie quarterback Mitch Trubisky had his first action with the team. In Week 4, the team defeated the Houston Texans 40-0 on the strength of his one and only touchdown of the season, a four-yard rush.
