Braxton Berrios

Braxton Berrios (born October 6, 1995) is an American football wide receiver for the New York Jets of the National Football League (NFL) (NFL). He participated in collegiate football for Miami (FL). He was a star athlete at Leesville Road High School in Raleigh, North Carolina where he played quarterback. The Patriots of New England picked him up in the sixth round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

The New York Jets’ first touchdown in the most recent civil war at MetLife Stadium was the result of blonde ambition. Braxton Berrios, sporting a do like the one worn by Jonny Lee Miller’s character in “Trainspotting,” tied the game for the Jets with a 21-yard touchdown reception from backup quarterback Mike White in their last preseason game on Sunday afternoon against the New York Giants.

Following a pick-six by the Giants that finished off a string of 10 straight scores, the profitable hook-up evened the score at 10 in the middle portions of the second quarter. The Giants lost because of Berrios’s speed, which was widely publicized among the specialists who vote for NFL All-Pro teams.

The final tally in the box score may only show 21 yards, but Berrios actually had to move around a bit and avoid contact with a few Giant defenders to get there. He received White’s screen ball behind the line of scrimmage and advanced past blue defender Cor’Dale Flott before outrunning the rest of the lower-case NYs for the score that drove an evenly split crowd into hysterics for different reasons.

It turns out that the only person who could truly corner Berrios was a cornerback on his own team. First-round freshman Sauce Gardner was the first to greet Berrios after his score, racing onto the field to partly mimic the famed leap from “Dirty Dancing” in celebration of the game-changing touchdown. One half of play has been completed, and the Jets are ahead, 17-10, against the Giants.

Berrios was claimed off waivers by the New York Jets. On September 20, 2020, in the Jets’ 31-13 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, Berrios caught Sam Darnold’s first career touchdown throw from 30 yards out.

Against the Cleveland Browns in Week 16 of the 2020 season, Berrios caught a touchdown ball from teammate wide receiver Jamison Crowder that was thrown on a trick play and went for 43 yards.

He scored a touchdown catch in Week 7 of the 2021 season against the Cincinnati Bengals. In Week 16 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Berrios returned a kickoff for a touchdown in a 26-21 win, winning AFC Special Teams Player of the Week. In Week 17, he caught a touchdown and ran for another, becoming the first Jets receiver to do it in the same game. Berrios was second on the team with 46 catches for 431 yards and two touchdowns, plus another 40 yards and two scores rushing.

When it comes to kicking returns, he was named to the All-Pro first team. At the end of the season, Berrios had the third-most yards in the NFL in punt returns (135) and the third-most in kickoff returns (852).
