Keith Yandle Retirement

Defenseman Keith Michael Yandle was born in the United States on September 9, 1986. He suited up for four different teams: the Arizona Coyotes, the New York Rangers, the Florida Panthers, and the Philadelphia Flyers. The Coyotes picked Yandle up in the fourth round of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. He was the 105th overall pick.

Yandle soon became the Coyotes’ go-to offensive defenseman, leading the team in scoring in back-to-back years (2012–13 and 2013–14).

As of the end of the 2020-21 season, he had played in 989 straight games, making him the third player in NHL history to achieve this feat. On January 25, 2022, Yandle played in his 965th consecutive game, surpassing Doug Jarvis’s record.

Defenseman Keith Yandle, who played in every game for the entire 1998–99 season, has retired. Yandle revealed the news on Tuesday’s episode of the Spittin Chiclets podcast.

The 36-year-old from Boston skated 1,109 games for the Phoenix/Arizona Coyotes, New York Rangers, Florida Panthers, and Philadelphia Flyers, scoring 103 goals and adding 516 assists for 619 total points.

In 2005, the Coyotes selected Yandle in the fourth round of the draft (105th overall). For 989 consecutive games beginning on March 26, 2009, Yandle set an NHL record. Yandle’s streak ended on March 29 when the Flyers announced he will be a healthy scratch for the following game, putting an end to a record that began on January 25 when he overtook Doug Jarvis (964 games).

After being bought out by the Panthers, Yandle signed a one-year contract with the Flyers and skated in 77 games for them, tallying one goal and 18 assists.

The Rangers transferred their contract negotiation rights to the Florida Panthers for a sixth-round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft before Yandle could become an unrestricted free agent. The Rangers would get a fourth-round pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft from the Panthers if they were able to sign Yandle by July 1.

In need of a powerful force on the power play, the Panthers signed Yandle three days later to a seven-year, $44.45 million contract. He didn’t score his first goal of the 2016–17 season until the 21st of November, in a 3-2 shootout victory over his previous team, the Rangers.

Yandle was hurt on December 5 against the Boston Bruins and was anticipated to miss “indefinite” time, but he surprised everyone by returning to the ice for the next day’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers, his 578th consecutive NHL game.

Lots of people were keeping an eye on his iron man streak as he started the 2021-22 season. Up to that point, Yandle had played in 922 consecutive games, putting him in second place all-time in NHL history, only 42 games behind leader Doug Jarvis.

On January 24, 2022, against the Dallas Stars, Yandle played in his 111th consecutive game with the Flyers, tying Jarvis’s record. On January 25, 2022, he made his debut against the New York Islanders and immediately set a new record, surpassing Jarvis’s mark.

The Flyers’ interim head coach Mike Yeo ended Yandle’s NHL record-setting streak of 989 straight games played on April 2, 2022, when he stated that Yandle would be a healthy scratch in a game against the Toronto Maple Leafs so that young prospect Ronnie Attard could get some ice time.

According to certain metrics, Yandle was the NHL’s weakest defender when Yeo made his decision. Yandle said his final goodbye to the NHL on September 20, 2022.
