On Thursday’s game, Penn State quarterback Sean Clifford left with an apparent left knee injury in the third quarter. After being evaluated by trainers in the PSU locker room, the 6-year quarterback was able to return with less than 8 minutes left in the third quarter. During Clifford’s absence, Penn State led Purdue 21-17 in the third quarter, and star recruit Drew Allar took over at quarterback for a few snaps.

In the midst of the first second-half series between the two teams’ defenses, Clifford received a low hit from a Purdue linebacker and strolled off the field with a Penn State football trainer. With a 67-yard pass as time expired in the first half, Clifford finished the first half with 8 of 15 completions for 141 yards and two scores.

Even though Clifford was seriously injured again in a road game last season, this time in Penn State’s loss to Iowa, he still managed to play in 13 games and set career highs in passing yards (3,107) and touchdown passes (28), and interceptions (8) that season.

A 5-star prospect out of Medina, Ohio (near Cleveland), Allar was a key addition to Penn State’s class this offseason. Allar, an elite athlete ranked in the top 30 nationally, has committed to play for Penn State.
