The North Carolina Tar Heels play the Pittsburgh Panthers. See our college football odds series for our prediction and choice for Pittsburgh vs. North Carolina.

The North Carolina Tar Heels have thus far 2022 written a very unlikely tale. North Carolina was the overwhelming favorite to win the ACC Coastal Division in 2021 going into the season. Sam Howell was returning at quarterback and had a strong group of seasoned wideouts.

In order to set up a matchup with Clemson for the ACC championship, it was anticipated that the UNC offense would be a force and dominate the division. It was supposed to be North Carolina’s moment, the Tar Heels’ big chance to make a statement on a national level and advance to the ACC’s elite.

However, the Tar Heels never quite clicked, finishing with a 6-6 record during the regular season and losing to South Carolina in the bowl game.

The season was a complete failure and a disgrace, and it appeared that coach Mack Brown had missed his chance to win the division. Miami was getting Mario Cristobal, the ACC champion Pittsburgh Steelers had a good amount of returning players, and Brennan Armstrong, the quarterback for the Virginia Cavaliers who set a record in 2021, was returning. When this season started, North Carolina was not at the top of any ACC title debate.

North Carolina may now be the Coastal favorite in late October. This season, Drake Maye has excelled at quarterback for the Tar Heels, producing major clutch plays like the late touchdown to defeat Duke. Early in the season, the Tar Heels defeated Appalachian State in a shootout, and they have since maintained a talent for using their offense to win close games. They are receiving adequate defense to pass several tests, including a road victory at Miami, and they are in the driver’s seat for the Coastal division.

Pittsburgh vs. North Carolina Predictions, Odds, and Pick for The College Football Game on October 29th, 2022

The reality is vastly different for Pittsburgh. After winning the division and the ACC championship the previous year, Pittsburgh was expected to be a strong contender for the Coastal Championship. The 2021 Panthers team, which won a New Year’s Six bowl and set the bar for the Panthers as a program, had a handful of players return. But this season has gone off course.

Kedon Slovis, a transfer quarterback, has not been able to provide the Panthers with the necessary offensive output. The offensive line hasn’t exactly been stellar. The Panthers, who just lost to Louisville and Georgia Tech and are struggling against relatively weak competition, have suffered greatly from the departure of receiver Jordan Addison, who transferred to USC.

Coach Pat Narduzzi’s season has been a nightmare, and he must now answer hard questions about his management of the team and the offensive strategy required to be successful consistently over the course of an entire season.

Why Pittsburgh Could Cover the Spread

This game means everything to the Panthers because they have underperformed this season and need to win it to turn things around and save the 2022 season. If they want to have any hope of having an impact in November, they must win this game.

They’re going to run out of gas and possibly ambush a North Carolina squad that may be overrated as a result of its thrilling victories in games that might have gone other way this season.

Why North Carolina Could Cover the Spread

The quarterback North Carolina has been seeking is Drake Maye. Sam Howell frequently missed big plays last season, but he has made them now. In this game, North Carolina’s attack is much stronger.

UNC should be able to perform easily and comfortably at home, getting into a rhythm and not allowing Pittsburgh’s defense to get accustomed to this game.
