Due to goals scored by Rodrygo and Fede Valverde in the first half, Real Madrid defeated rivals Atletico Madrid 2-1 in the opening Madrid Derby of the 2022/23 season at the Civitas Metropolitano.
Mario Hermoso scored an equalizer off the bench for Atleti, but he was sent out for two stupid yellow cards, leaving his team with ten men as they pressed for an equalizer that never arrived.
Felipe, Yannick Carrasco, and Geoffrey Kondogbia all had early opportunities for Atletico, but it was Real Madrid who eventually scored against the run of play. Fede Valverde pushed forward and found Rodrygo, who played a stunning one-two with Aurelien Tchouameni before scoring past a stunned Jan Oblak.
Although Vinicius, who had been the subject of racist chants before the game, did not score, he was still able to celebrate with his teammates when they scored twice and he had a hand in the second goal by assisting on a rebound that Fede Valverde scored.
Both at the end of the first and at the beginning of the second, Atletico had a hard time getting back into the game.
The team didn’t start creating anything until Angel Correa came on, but Thibaut Courtois appeared unconcerned the entire time. It was a tie until Atletico’s corner kick, when the Belgian swung and failed, allowing Hermoso to head the ball in at the near post.
The Atleti corner kick went to waste due to the Spanish defender’s foul, and he was subsequently shown two yellow cards in short succession for getting in the face of Dani Carvajal and assaulting Dani Ceballos.
It was enough for Real Madrid to hang on for a 2-1 victory and improve their record to 9-0 to kick out the 2022/23 campaign.
