Rj Barrett

Rowan Alexander “RJ” Barrett Jr. (born June 14, 2000) is a Canadian professional basketball player for the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association (NBA) (NBA). After only one season with the Duke Blue Devils, he was chosen third overall by the New York Knicks in the 2019 NBA Draft.

Barrett, the son of former basketball player Rowan Barrett and born in Toronto, excelled at St. Marcellinus Secondary School in Mississauga, Ontario, before going to Montverde Academy in Montverde, Florida.

Agent Bill Duffy of BDA Sports and WME Sports informed ESPN on Monday that New York Knicks guard RJ Barrett is completing a four-year rookie agreement that could be worth up to $120 million, complicating the team’s summer trade chase of Utah Jazz All-Star Donovan Mitchell.

Barrett’s contract, which makes him the youngest $100 million player in Knicks history at age 22, puts an end to several weeks of trade conversations for Mitchell between New York and Utah and, if they so choose, forces the two clubs to reopen talks with considerably different considerations.

According to our sources, Knicks head of basketball operations Leon Rose gave the Jazz until Monday night to work out a trade for Mitchell or the team will move on with an extension for R.J. Barrett.

According to insiders, the gap between the Jazz and Knicks narrowed over the weekend and into Monday on deal points that included Barrett in the package but remained wide on completing a trade for Mitchell. Rose and Duffy negotiated the agreement Monday night after the Knicks and Jazz had talked themselves to exhaustion over it.

According to an analysis by ESPN Stats & Information, the Knicks have not signed a draft pick to a multiyear contract extension following his rookie deal since Charlie Ward in 1999, so Barrett’s deal represents the end of a stunning 23-year skid.

Barrett led the Knicks in scoring last year with 20 points per game, while also contributing 5.8 rebounds and 3 assists a game. Among Duke’s 2019 draftees, he was the third overall choice, after Zion Williamson of New Orleans and Ja Morant of Memphis.

Barrett joined Kobe Bryant, Luka Doncic, Kevin Durant, and LeBron James as the only players in NBA history to record 3,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, and 200 three-pointers before turning 22.

There was a delay in finalizing the agreement because, according to sources, the Knicks included Barrett in trade offers for Mitchell. Several trade scenarios involving Barrett were explored on Monday, but obstacles remained about the number of unprotected first-round picks and whether or not Knicks guard Quentin Grimes would be included in the transaction.

However, sources added that the Jazz highly valued Barrett as a component of any Mitchell deal with New York and that a deal without him would require the Knicks to relinquish considerably more draft assets than they’ve shown a willingness to do.

Since the Knicks have already extended Barrett, the front office has accepted the reality that trading for Mitchell over the offseason will be extremely difficult. Yet, according to insiders, neither Utah nor New York is completely dismissing the possibility of resuming negotiations before the start of training camps in late September.

Since early July, the two teams have been in intermittent talks over a possible deal. Only one of the 179 players in NBA history with a poison pill clause has had his position changed, and that was Devin Harris in 2008.

The Knicks’ outgoing money in a Barrett deal would be $10.9 million according to the poison pill’s formula, while the acquiring team’s incoming salary would need to be $26.2 million. On July 1 of the next offseason, the limitation will be removed.

The Knicks would need to find a third team with salary cap room to divert Evan Fournier’s $37 million deal in order to trade for Barrett and send him to the Jazz.

According to sources, the Jazz is not actively negotiating with any other teams about a contract for Mitchell at this time, which means he might still be on the team’s roster when training camp begins.

With the trade of All-Star center Rudy Gobert to the Minnesota Timberwolves in July for five first-round selections, the Jazz has shown their intent to begin a rebuild. Mitchell, 25 years old, is a native of the New York metropolitan area and a three-time All-Star who would immediately take over as the top player for the team.

Barrett finished the night with 13 points, six assists, and the game-winning three-pointer in a tightly contested situation, lifting the Knicks to a 108-105 victory over the Boston Celtics after falling behind by as much as 25 points. He scored 31 points twice in a row on January 10 and 12; the first time was against the San Antonio Spurs, and the second time was against the Dallas Mavericks.

Barrett scored 32 points making a franchise record and becoming the youngest Knick to get consecutive games with at least 30 points at just 21 years old. He joined Kevin Garnett, Kobe Bryant, Tracy McGrady, LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant, and Luka Doncic as the eighth NBA player to score 2,000 points, 500 rebounds, and 300 assists before turning 21.
