Rockets Overreacted After the First Mont

After losing to the Golden State Warriors at home tonight, the Houston Rockets just dropped their second and third contests. Their fourteenth loss of the season and fifth setback in their previous six games. The Rockets are currently in last place in the Western Conference, Southwest Division, and overall.

Some people had anticipated that the youthful Rockets would play better this year, but that hasn’t really happened yet. Are they intentionally tanking? They may have one of the best possibilities right now to get the top choice in the next draught, but we are unsure. Here, we’ll examine the reasons the Houston Rockets will have a terrible season and select Victor Wembanyama in the 2023 NBA Draft.

The Rockets will end up with Victor Wembanyama

The Rockets have dropped 14 of their last 17 games since the start of the 2022–23 NBA season. The Rockets are now on a cold spell and are once again in danger of having the poorest win-loss record in the league.

Many of their players have not quite developed as quickly as we had hoped, and first-round choice Jabari Smith Jr. has not lived up to expectations. In reality, he is performing poorly on the court and shooting the ball exceedingly poorly (29.2 percent).

It comes as no surprise that there are currently rumblings about potential moves. Eric Gordon, the most important veteran in the rotation, is one of the names being thrown around. He is currently of little help to the Rockets, objectively speaking. He and the group would both benefit from a change of scenery.

Apart from potential trades, the Rockets’ current season situation raises one query: are they tanking for French big man Victor Wembanyama?

Nobody truly believed the Rockets would be able to sign Wembanyama in 2023 before the current campaign began. However, it appears that the Rockets, Hornets, and Pistons are currently locked in a three-way race. Of course, keep in mind that it’s still too early to predict what will happen at the NBA draught lottery for 2023, which will take place in May of next year.

Of course, Wembanyama is anticipated to be the first pick in the upcoming draught. He is more than just his size, based on what we have seen thus far. His skill set is remarkable, and it’s pretty enticing to think about the impact he could have the next season. Giannis Antetokounmpo, a two-time MVP and NBA champion, has heaped praise on Wemby.

However, despite what many people believed at the beginning of the season, Houston’s opposition at the bottom of the league standings appears to be entirely different.

After a promising start to the season, the Spurs have currently dropped nine of their last ten games. The Jazz and Pacers continue to perform much above expectations in the meanwhile. Thanks to Shai Gilgeous-outstanding Alexander’s performance, even the Thunder are barely keeping afloat.

As a result, the Rockets are the heavy favorites to have the worst record at the end of the Western Conference season. But by the end of the year, they might have the worst record in the league.

Fans that are anticipating Wembley won’t find that to be a problem. But when Stephen Silas was appointed the team’s head coach back in 2020, this might not have been precisely what he had in mind.

Remember that when he signed with the Rockets, he believed they will be strong for the upcoming few seasons. James Harden was still in his prime and was accompanied by Eric Gordon, P.J. Tucker, and Russell Westbrook, the former MVP. But Silas never managed a clear shot. Despite the departure of Harden and Westbrook and the lackluster performance of a frustrated John Wall. As a result, Silas’ tenure was difficult and dramatic.

Of course, their current 3-14 record is also demoralizing right now. The fact that they do have interesting and brilliant young men is a silver lining. They might even develop into a competitive core in the future with a little more experience.

They have point guard Kevin Porter and the No. 2 selection in 2021, Jalen Green. That backcourt is strong and has the potential to be quite exceptional. Alperen Sengun is another, and his statistics have increased significantly in year two. This would undoubtedly be one of the most promising young cores on the planet if Smith gets his rhythm and they manage to sign Wembanyama the following year.

Their fan base will undoubtedly find Wembanyama’s addition to be appealing. But keep in mind that even the worst league record does not guarantee the first draught pick.

A more level playing field has been produced by the NBA’s new lottery odds, which offer each of the bottom three clubs a 14% chance of receiving the top choice. Even if the Rockets finish last year, they would not board the Wembley bus.

This is another reason why the Rockets’ current performance has us a little bit disappointed. We want to see these players make some real progress, even if they are tanking for Wembanyama.

Porter and Sengun are both very talented, and Green has all-star potential written all over him. Smith should, of course, live up to his reputation; after all, he was once considered to be the best player available.

It will undoubtedly take some more time for the Rockets to rebuild. For this team, the upcoming weeks and months are vital.

It will also be the responsibility of Silas & Co. to establish the procedures and frameworks necessary for these players to excel. Even if they are successful in acquiring Wembanyama the following year, little will change if a winning culture and organization are not established.
