Ross Barkley

Southampton’s new owners supported manager Ralph Hasenhuttl by funding the addition of ten players during one of the finest transfer windows in recent memory.

In addition to Ainsley Maitland-Niles on loan from Arsenal, Manchester City’s Samuel Edozie and Juan Larios signed long-term deals, and Croatian international defender Duje Caleta-Car joined on the final day of the transfer window.

But not everything went according to plan; the Saints were unable to sign the star striker they had been targeting all summer.

Even though the window is closed, Southampton may still sign any free agents they choose. Champions League winners Juan Mata and Daniel Sturridge are among the unsigned players, as are former Premier League stars Hatem Ben Arfa (previously of Newcastle United) and Diego Costa (who won a title with Chelsea).

Midfielder Ross Barkley is also free after mutually agreeing to have his £200,000 per week contract with the Blues terminated. The 28-year-career old’s has taken a turn for the worst since he left Everton for Chelsea in 2018. He made just 100 appearances in Chelsea uniform over four years and spent a season on loan at Aston Villa.

According to the Daily Mail, Southampton is presently ‘leading the race to acquire Barkley. However, when asked by HampshireLive on Friday if he would need to utilize the free agency market, Hasenhuttl stated he couldn’t say for sure.

The Austrian responded, “Not really, but you never know what happens,” when asked if he intended to add any free agents. The main thing is that nobody gets hurt, so I hope that’s the case.

We’ve had one with Romeo (Lavia) for a while, but I don’t think this is it. Keep in mind that we still have about ten games until the next break for the World Cup and that the next transfer window opens on January 1.

“Therefore, there is not much time to wait till the next opening. We’re prepared to play in the league this year, and we intend to demonstrate it every weekend.
