Russell Westbrook’s

The Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Denver Nuggets 121-110 on Sunday night to earn their first victory of the year. LeBron James scored 26 points to take the lead, and Russell Westbrook once more came off the bench.

Westbrook was the second-unit starter, but he still had a significant impact. He scored a total of 18 points, pulled down eight rebounds, distributed eight assists, made a few triples, and made all four free throws. Westbrook has performed admirably in the two games after Lakers head coach Darvin Ham indicated he would sit out.

With Westbrook on the court, the Lakers are up 18. When he is sitting, they are a -16. Of course, there are only two games, so the sample size is limited. However, the Lakers have made quick starts, and Westbrook has found his flow and isn’t overdoing it.

Despite playing 32 minutes (starters minutes) on Sunday, he only committed three turnovers. For most players, that would be a lot, but not for Westbrook. On the bench, he added another 18 points in Friday’s defeat to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Basketball-related criticism of Russell Westbrook has occasionally been heard inside the Lakers’ organization. Some of that is unquestionably deserved, as he has had trouble integrating ever since arriving in Los Angeles last season. However, the Lakers’ best chance of winning may lie in benching the former All-Star.

He gives the second unit some leadership and a scoring punch. Tuesday night against the New Orleans Pelicans at home, the Lakers will try to pick up their second straight victory.
