Tyrann Mathieu

Keep an eye on this developing crisis. Star safety Tyrann Mathieu was labeled as questionable to participate in Sunday’s season opener against the Atlanta Falcons after missing practice with an unexpected illness, according to the final Week 1 New Orleans Saints injury report. Considering Mathieu’s consistent attendance at weekly practices, this turns out to be an unexpected turn of events.

Actually, it couldn’t have happened at a worse time. Cornerback Paulson Adebo is still out for the season after injuring his ankle in preseason action, so the Saints are short-handed at the position. After trading nickel corner C.J. Gardner-Johnson to the Eagles a week ago and then having large free agent addition Marcus Maye arrested for what has been described as a road rage incident, the team’s recent fortunes have taken a turn for the worse.

Maye’s early season availability should not be affected by this (the NFL usually waits for the legal process to finish itself before imposing suspensions and another discipline), but it does highlight the different challenges faced by the Saints’ secondary. The pass defense is the foundation upon which New Orleans has built this club.

Despite having Marshon Lattimore anchor one side of the field at cornerback and experienced backups Bradley Roby and P.J. Williams eager to step back into the lineup (and rookie draft pick Alontae Taylor hungry for his own opportunity), facing a bitter rival while missing Adebo and possibly Mathieu is, um, difficult.

It’s too late to do anything about it now. Things will heat up on this front following Saturday’s walkthrough session before we go on to pregame warmups on Sunday. It’s likely that the Saints’ secondary depth will be put to the test sooner in 2018 than they’d like.

Mathieu scored his first defensive touchdown with the Chiefs and his second overall in their 26-10 Week 4 victory over the New England Patriots. Two of Drew Lock’s throws were picked off by Mathieu during Week 13’s Sunday Night Football game against the Denver Broncos.

He made two interceptions, the second of which sealed a 22-16 victory for the Chiefs late in the fourth quarter. There were 62 total tackles, 9 passes defended, 1 fumble recovery, and a career-high 6 interceptions for Mathieu by the end of the 2020 season.

Mathieu picked off Baker Mayfield’s pass in the Divisional Playoff Round win over the Cleveland Browns, which helped his team to a 22-17 victory. Mathieu had three tackles as the New England Patriots fell to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 9-31, in Super Bowl LV.

Mathieu tweeted after the game that Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady “said me something I won’t repeat” during their heated exchange earlier in the game. Following some backlash, Mathieu deleted the tweet. The NFL has been reluctant to share audio of the incident in which Brady was Muc’d up.
