Even a minor injury to the quarterback during training camp might have far-reaching consequences for the 49ers. That’s why it hit close to home when Saints quarterback Jameis Winston left practice early with what turned out to be a foot injury and sent shockwaves through the Bay Area.
Saints head coach Dennis Allen said it was a “tweak” after practice, but he didn’t have any further information to provide. Now, NewOrleans.Nick Football’s Underhill, who covers the Saints, reports that the injury doesn’t appear to be too serious.
However, it is far from guaranteed that the Saints would contact the 49ers about Garoppolo if they were to lose Winston for an extended period of time. If Winston is out for an extended period of time, New Orleans may decide to stick with veteran Andy Dalton, who they signed in the offseason, as their starting quarterback.
Jameis Winston, the quarterback for the New Orleans Saints, reportedly injured his ankle during Monday’s practice. The 28-year-old “rolled his ankle today and is getting a further evaluation,” according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The Florida State graduate is back for his third season with the Saints after missing all of last year due to an ACL tear. After the team’s attempt to trade for Deshaun Watson fell through, he stayed in New Orleans on a two-year free agent contract.

Winston’s injury status is important to keep an eye on as we get closer to the start of the regular season since the Saints can cut ties with him after the 2022 season with no cap damage if he struggles or doesn’t remain healthy.
Katherine Terrell of ESPN said that Winston was replaced in practice by veteran Andy Dalton after he was injured on Monday.
After leaving the Panthers for the Panthers, Winston re-signed with the Saints on a $12 million one-year deal. Winston threw for 111 yards and 2 picks but no touchdowns in the following week’s 26-7 loss to the Carolina Panthers, despite the fact that several starters were out with injuries and seven coaches were absent due to COVID-19.
Winston threw for 279 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 1 interception while also fumbling the ball once and losing it twice as the Saints beat the Washington Football Team 33-22 in week 5.
Winston completed 6 of 10 passes for 56 yards and a touchdown against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 8, but he left the game in the second quarter with a knee injury after being horse-collar tackled by Buccaneers linebacker Devin White.
Trevor Siemian, who came in as a replacement for him, led the Broncos to a 36–27 victory. Winston’s season was over after he tore his ACL and damaged his MCL the following day.
