Seranthony Dominguez Injury

There were two losses for the Philadelphia Phillies bullpen on Sunday. The team said that right-handed pitcher Corey Knebel has been placed on the 60-day injured list with a torn shoulder capsule and will not pitch again this season. On the other side, right-hander Seranthony Dominguez has been placed on the 15-day disabled list due to triceps tightness.

Earlier in the season, Knebel closed games for the Phillies. He is now preparing for stem-cell therapy in the hopes of avoiding surgery. Knebel, who was 30 at the time, with a 1.46 K/BB ratio and a 3.43 ERA (120 ERA+) in 44 2/3 innings that year. Considering he may leave for free agency after the upcoming season, the injury could mean the end of his time in Philadelphia.

Dominic González, a 27-year-old reliever, has been manager Rob Thomson’s go-to closer this year and has been the Phillies’ most effective reliever. After 44 innings pitched, Dominguez has a 1.64 ERA (251 ERA+) with 54 strikeouts and 13 walks (all of which were unintentional).

Dominguez has been credited by our very own Mike Axisa as a major reason for the team’s success since Joe Girardi was replaced by Mike Thomson in early June. Dominguez’s triceps injury does not appear to be a major cause for concern at this time, and the team is hopeful that he will only need to spend a very minimal amount of time on the injured list (IL).

This is bad news for the Phillies’ bullpen at the worst possible time. They are 2 1/2 games ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers heading into Sunday’s rubber match with the New York Mets, and they are in second place in the National League’s wild-card standings, behind only the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Superstar Bryce Harper is slated to begin a rehab assignment this week, and following this week’s series with the Mets, the Phillies will play 22 consecutive games against teams with losing records.

Seranthony Dominguez Injury

He had the second-lowest contact percentage in the National League among pitchers who threw at least 50 innings, at 66.4%. His 16 saves were tied for the most ever by a rookie reliever for the Phillies, with Jack Meyer (1955). He was selected to both Baseball America’s and Baseball Digest’s 2018 MLB All-Rookie Teams.

In 2019, he made 27 relief appearances and went 3-0 with a 4.74 ERA while striking out 29 batters in 24 2/3 innings (or 10.6 K/9 IP). He was forced to put an early end to his season after tearing the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.
