Serena Williams

It had been a year since Serena Williams played professional singles tennis. She is an investor, producer in Hollywood, campaigner, fashion designer, and mother in addition to being an occasional tennis player.

Nevertheless, if Diana Ross, at the age of 78, was able to take the stage at Glastonbury, Serena Williams, at the age of 40, surely could too?

As part of a group that tried to buy Chelsea Football Club this year, the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion turned on the “out of office” button for her emails in order to focus on her tennis. To add insult to injury, Williams was knocked out of Wimbledon in the first round by newcomer Harmony Tan, who outlasted her for three hours and three minutes.

She faced a 24-year-old French opponent who was born the same year as Williams when she made her debut at Wimbledon. In those days, Serena was just Venus’s younger sister. As Sister Sledgehammer, the nanny GOAT of this sport, she rose to prominence in the early years.

Last year, a sad Williams was forced to withdraw from this tournament because of a hamstring injury she sustained in the first set of her first-round match against Aliaksandra Sasnovich.

She didn’t want to see her favorite patch of grass go out in flames. As a seven-time Wimbledon winner, Maria Sharapova wanted to end her career on her own terms and in the style of her own accomplishments. Alternatively, with a ninth triumphant triumph

While wearing stickers on her face to help her deal with an underlying sinus problem, Williams started out on the wrong foot. She double-faulted and missed an open court with her volley and she was broken in the first game.

During an intense fourth game, though, the old warrior-princess attitude returned – and twice Williams smashed cross-court winners on the return of service. She screamed with joy the second time around.

Williams broke after a long rally. Her backhand whack-a-mole wreaked further havoc. In fact, Tan became very fond of the dish.

It was the support act trying to upstage the grand diva with an astonishing lob that got her back in the game. Before serving for the set, she even started cheering the Centre Court fans. A protracted arm-wrestle of THIRTEEN deuces ensued in the second game of the second set before Williams’ resolve prevailed.

I’m not sure how Serena managed to rattle off five straight games with that racket, but she did, and we were soon in the final set. Afterward, she hoisted her arm high like the Statue of Liberty after an impromptu net winner.

Even nevertheless, Tan remained defiant. Once again, Williams appeared to be shaken as she fought her way back to the front. My voice trailed off. Probably has something to do with respecting one’s elders.

There were moments when Williams’ 40 years of life seemed to be beginning to shine through in the pain, the exhaustion, and the constant shouting that came with every stretch.

At one point, Williams was serving for the match until Tan broke her. A match point saved by Serena Williams in her following service game forced a tie-break, which she lost 10-7. If this was her final performance, she had definitely sung out a great song.
