Shai Gilgeous-Alexander

The Oklahoma City Thunder started a protracted rebuild in the hopes of selecting a game-changer at the top of upcoming NBA draughts after blowing up their team at the end of the 2019 season and trading Paul George to the Los Angeles Clippers for a package that included Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and a tonne of picks.

But it appears that SGA has evolved into the premier two-way player the Thunder required as they seek to regain their position in the race. In fact, he is writing his name alongside franchise greats Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant as he compiles gaudy stat lines to start the 2022–23 season.

According to ESPN Stats & Info, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is one of just three players in Thunder franchise history to have recorded at least 35 points and at least five assists in three straight games. He shares this distinction with KD and Russ. The accomplishment was accomplished once in 2014 by Kevin Durant, the NBA MVP for the 2013–14 season, and four times in the past by Russell Westbrook, the MVP for the 2016–17 season.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander

On top-notch 50-40-90 shooting splits, Gilgeous-Alexander has an incredible season average of 32.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 5.9 assists. With 1.9 steals and 1.4 blocks added to his nightly efforts, SGA is also using his height and length at the guard positions to be a nuisance on defense.

The Oklahoma City Thunder improved to 7-8 on the season after Shai Gilgeous-game-winning Alexander’s stepback three over the Washington Wizards. This isn’t too bad, especially given the high expectations for the squad this season. From here, the Thunder should only rise, if all goes well.

SGA should have a tonne of weapons thanks to the anticipated, ongoing improvements of young players like Josh Giddey, Luguentz Dort, and Aleksej Pokusevski (who have been emerging as a two-way force in recent games). The squad should also benefit from Chet Holmgren’s comeback the following season.

However, given his high level of performance to start the year, OKC won’t want it any other way; the Thunder’s future in previous seasons appears to be in SGA’s hands.
