A tight end for the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders, Darren Charles Waller was born on September 13, 1992. (NFL). He attended Georgia Tech, where he participated in football while in college. The jazz pianist and composer Fats Waller is his great-grandfather.
Star tight end for the Las Vegas Raiders Darren Waller has changed agencies in an effort to secure a new deal before the upcoming season. After less than a year with the agency, Waller parted ways with Klutch Sports last week and signed with Drew Rosenhaus and Robert Bailey on Wednesday.
Rosenhaus wrote in a text message, “I plan on going to work on this right immediately” in regards to negotiating a new deal for Waller. Waller’s 2019 deal includes a two-year option. In those years, he is owed a little under $14 million in unguaranteed salary and is looking for a new contract that better reflects his output.
Waller’s average annual compensation is $11.6 million, which places him 17th among NFL tight ends, per Over The Cap.
Waller is second in the NFL in receptions (252) and yards (3,000) among tight ends since becoming a starter in 2019. Only Travis Kelce of Kansas City has more. Furthermore, over the past three seasons, he has caught 14 touchdown passes, tying for fifth most in the NFL.
Waller, who will turn 30 on September 13, only played 11 games in 2017 due to ankle and knee ailments. He hauled in 55 receptions for 665 yards and two touchdowns. The Raiders expect Waller to contribute to quarterback Derek Carr’s potent passing attack alongside All-Pro receiver Davante Adams and slot receiver Hunter Renfrow.

For reasons that have yet to be divulged, Waller has missed most of training camp. Injuries to his hamstring have kept him out of action since he briefly returned to practice on August 17.
The Raiders head coach, Josh McDaniels, confirmed that Waller will return to practice on Wednesday. “To put it simply, Darren is competent. In other words, Darren is fit to go and will be there today. At this point, I have very little information about the [agent] situation “McDaniels declared on Wednesday.
“But he’ll be playing today, and he’s pumped to keep things moving for the rest of the team as we try to place players where we think they’ll be successful in the next opening week. Basically, I’m pumped.”
On September 11th, the Raiders will kick off their season against the Los Angeles Chargers.
Waller recorded his first 100-yard receiving game with 134 yards on 13 receptions in Week 3 against the Minnesota Vikings, but the Raiders still lost by a score of 34-14. Waller extended his contract with the Raiders by three years, to the end of the 2023 season, on October 16.
Waller caught seven passes for 126 yards and two touchdowns as the New York Jets lost 42-24 to the Green Bay Packers in Week 7. Waller caught seven catches for 100 yards in a Week 13 loss (40-9) against the Kansas City Chiefs. He grabbed seven passes for 63 yards and one touchdown in Week 14’s 42-21 loss to the Tennessee Titans.
Waller had eight receptions for 122 receiving yards and two touchdowns in the Raiders Week 15 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, which they defeated 20-16. Waller caught six passes for 107 yards and a touchdown (75 yards) in the Week 17 loss to the Denver Broncos, which the team ultimately lost 16-15.
After the Kansas City Chiefs made it to the Super Bowl, Waller was slated to replace Travis Kelce as the starting tight end, but Kelce had recently undergone thumb surgery and was out for the season. Despite being nominated as an alternate to the 2020 Pro Bowl, Waller never played in the game. Instead of Jack Doyle, Jack Kelce will serve as an alternate. Waller had 90 receptions for 1,145 yards and three touchdowns in 2019.
