Jakeem Grant Injury

Jakeem Grant Sr., a wide receiver and kick returner for the Cleveland Browns, was placed on injured reserve Wednesday with a torn Achilles and will miss the entire 2022 season.

In Tuesday’s practice, Grant was injured and had to be taken off the field. Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski stated on Tuesday, before the results of the follow-up tests were known, “I really feel bad for Jakeem.” “Since joining our company, the young man has worked really hard, as we can attest to.

Although injuries are unfortunately common in professional sports, that fact does little to ease the pain for players like Jakeem, who consistently puts in extra effort and projects a confident demeanor on the field despite the fact that he is a known injury risk.”

Grant was signed by the Browns this offseason on a three-year deal as their kick and punt returner, but he has also excelled as a slot receiver in training.

Grant, who started his career with the Miami Dolphins in 2016, is a return specialist who made the Pro Bowl with the Chicago Bears last year. He has scored four times on punt returns and twice on kickoff returns.

Mike Priefer, the Browns’ special teams coach, predicted earlier this week that Grant would “change” the team’s return game. Now that Grant can’t play, the Browns will use Demetric Felton Jr. to return kicks and punts.

While speaking to the media on Sunday, Grant emphasized his “always preach that I’m a receiver first before a returner” stance. “Yes, I will keep spreading that gospel. I won’t stop trying until I have a breakthrough season.”

Jakeem Grant Injury

The wide receiver position has been especially hard hit by injury for the Browns this summer. Isaiah Weston (knee) and Michael Woods II (hamstring) are still on IR, and Javon Wims (illness), Anthony Schwartz (knee), and David Bell (foot) have all missed a week of practice.

For the time being, Cleveland will rely on Demetric Felton for return duties, while other alternatives include running back D’Ernest Johnson and wide-outs Donovan Peoples-Jones and Schwartz.

Career

Grant scored a touchdown by returning a punt 88 yards for a score as his team won 28-17. Grant broke three Dolphins franchise records during the game: longest punt return (88 yards), most career punt returns for a touchdown, and most total returns for a touchdown (5 total).

Grant was honored as the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week for Week 8 on November 4, 2020. Once the season was over, Grant was recognized for his outstanding punt return work by being named to the All-Pro Second Team. Grant played in 14 games, and his stats reflect that: 36 receptions, 373 yards, and a single receiving touchdown.

On October 5, 2021, Grant was traded to the Chicago Bears for a sixth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. In week 5’s matchup with the Raiders, he made his debut for the squad. While the Philadelphia Eagles lost 33-22 to the Arizona Cardinals in Week 13, Grant had five receptions for 62 yards and a score.

In Week 14’s 45-30 loss to the Green Bay Packers, Grant was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week after catching one pass for 46 yards and scoring a touchdown, then returning a punt for 97 yards and another score.
