Jonathan Huberdeau

With the acquisition of Jonathan Huberdeau, MacKenzie Weegar, and Cole Schwindt, as well as a lottery-protected 2025 first-round selection from Florida on Friday, the Calgary Flames executed a huge move.

For 2022-23, how does the Flames’ cap situation look after signing two established NHL players? In addition to the proven NHL regulars already on two-way contracts, the Flames now have 21 players on one-way contracts for the 2022-23 season:

There are two goaltenders, nine defensemen, and ten forwards under contract, totaling $73.2 million in cap commitments for the Calgary Flames. As a result, the Penguins have $9.3 million available for new contracts for restricted free agents Andrew Mangiapane (a goaltender) and Oliver Kylington (a defenseman).

Consider that the Flames won’t be carrying 10 defenders, though: We may assume the Flames will carry seven defenders if we put Valimaki in as the seventh (and most expensive) option for cap planning and assume Meloche, Mackey, and Gilbert will be playing in the AHL.

Assuming that Mangiapane and Kylington’s new contracts are each worth $5 million, the Flames will have two goaltenders, seven defensemen, and 11 forwards on their roster, with around $4.175 million in cap space left over for another two or three forwards to finish out the lineup. If they have a seventh defender who is paid less than Valimaki, that gap widens.)

Because of their depth on the blue line, they may still be able to add without entirely sacrificing their cap space. To fill out the remaining two or three positions, they might possibly turn to in-house candidates like Adam Ruzicka (RFA) or Jakob Pelletier ($863,333).

As far as Brad Treliving is concerned, the Flames aren’t done tinkering. That said, what they’ve already put together is balanced and gives the club some financial leeway as they approach the fall.

 Jonathan Huberdeau

Huberdeau was named to the Panthers’ starting lineup for the 2012–13 season following the end of the NHL lockout. On the 19th of January, 2013, against Cam Ward of the Carolina Hurricanes, he scored his first NHL goal on his second shift and first NHL shot.

In his NHL debut, Huberdeau had two assists and was named the game’s first star. The Panthers were allowed to keep Huberdeau in their lineup for a maximum of five games before they had to either return him to his junior team or keep him in Florida under NHL restrictions.

To celebrate Huberdeau finishing up the season with the Panthers after five games and a point and an assist, they made an official announcement on January 28th, 2013. [11] He was awarded the Calder Memorial Trophy in 2013 for his great rookie season.

He has a career-high 15 goals and 39 assists (54 points) in 77 appearances in the 2014–15 season. He scored six goals and added 15 assists (21 points) in 20 games with Jaromir Jágr and Aleksander Barkov on Florida’s top line following Florida’s late-season acquisition of Jágr from the New Jersey Devils.

For the first time since 2008–09, a Panthers player had more assists than Huberdeau (39). Huberdeau was scheduled to become a restricted free agent at the end of the season.

Huberdeau’s six-year, $35.4 million contract with the Panthers was signed on September 6, 2016. Tallon described Huberdeau as “a highly gifted and energetic player who is another crucial component of our young core” after signing him, saying, “Jonathan is another important piece in our team’s youthful core.” He has averaged more than 50 points in each of the last two seasons, and he’s become an important part of our offense.
