Adam Shaheen

Adam Shaheen, a veteran tight end for the Dolphins, was traded to the Texans on Tuesday. This change occurs just before the Dolphins and Buccaneers hold two combined practices in preparation for Saturday’s first preseason game. The Dolphins also included a 7th-round pick in 2023 when they traded for Shaheen from the Texans. In exchange, they get a choice in the sixth round in 2023.

Shaheen was traded to the Dolphins from the Chicago Bears in exchange for a seventh-round draft pick in 2020. The selection, which had been traded to Miami from the Seattle Seahawks the year before in exchange for another draft choice, eventually became a sixth-round pick, the 208th overall selection. Once again, the Bears sent the pick back to the Seahawks as part of a package deal involving other draft choices.

Adam Shaheen

Shaheen, a 2017 second-round pick out of Ashland, spent three years with the Bears, during which he played 27 games and recorded 26 receptions for 249 yards and four touchdowns. With the Dolphins, Shaneen played in 28 games over two seasons and had 24 receptions for 260 yards and three touchdowns.

In releasing Shaheen, the Dolphins have solved a logjam at tight end. Hunter Long, a second-year player, Cethan Carter, an expert on special teams, and youngster Tanner Conner round out Miami’s roster behind starters Mike Gesicki and Durham Smythe. Gesicki, Smythe, Long, and Carter might all return for the Dolphins this season, with Conner serving as a possible developmental player on the Dolphins practice squad.

Training camp resumes for Miami on Monday with the first of two sessions against the Buccaneers. At 10 a.m. Eastern, the Buccaneers will have a practice open to the public, as well as members of the media and season ticket holders.

The Texans want to use a tight end as a focal point of Pep Hamilton’s passing strategy, and Shaheen’s massive stature and reliable hands make him an intriguing option.

The combination of Shaheen’s height (86th percentile) and arm length (33.5 inches, 68th percentile) gives his quarterback plenty of options for where to throw the ball.

Shaheen has shown his worth as a receiver most often in the end zone, scoring three times as a rookie in Chicago and three more times in his debut season with the Dolphins.

Once again playing right tackle, Shaheen (87) lines up to the right of Trubisky, who throws him a beautiful touchdown ball.

All offenses need from their backup tight end is someone like Shaheen, who can provide a reliable safety blanket over the center of the field. Because of his big grab radius and reliable hands, sophomore quarterback Davis Mills will have greater room to make mistakes without negatively impacting the team’s success.

If and to what extent Shaheen can stretch defenses downfield as a receiver is yet to be seen. His career average receiving yardage is barely 10.2, and his best year was 2020 when he averaged 12.5.

Still, Shaheen has been a part of some pretty dysfunctional offenses under the direction of coaches like Dowell Loggains (2017) and Matt Nagy (2018+2019) in Chicago, as well as Chan Gailey (2020) and George Godsey (2021) in Miami, all of whom have been fired and are no longer offensive coordinators anywhere in the NFL.

Also, during his five-year career, Shaheen has not been surrounded by extremely experienced or talented quarterbacks. Shaheen has spent the most time working with quarterbacks Mitch Trubisky and Tua Tagovailoa, although neither is known for deep passing.
