It appeared for a while that the floodgates may open as Ilkay Gundogan gave City an early lead with a goal. But after 21 minutes, when Nathan Ake was taken out due to injury, the tides turned. They brought on Ruben Dias in his stead, but both he and John Stones looked shaky during Newcastle’s first two goals and should have done better.

After the game, Guardiola gave an update on his Dutch defender. If you ask the manager, “I think it’s his groin,” which is what he responded when asked what kind of injury Ake had incurred. When asked if the 27-year-old will play in Wednesday’s friendly against Barcelona, City’s manager answered, “Absolutely not.”
How long Ake will be sidelined is unknown, but both he and Guardiola will be hoping he’s healthy in time to face Crystal Palace at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
