Ryan Ellis Injury

The Philadelphia Flyers anticipate Ryan Ellis, a defenseman, to miss the entire 2022–23 season due to a back ailment. General manager Chuck Fletcher said Thursday at training camp that Ryan Ellis would be sidelined indefinitely. “Let’s just say that I don’t expect him to participate in any games this year. It would be a nice bonus if he did. This is how we’ve been getting ready for the season.”

Ellis, 31, was acquired from the Nashville Predators in a trade, although he only saw action in four games for the Flyers last year. Center Nolan Patrick was moved from the Flyers to the Vegas Golden Knights as part of that three-team deal. Patrick, the Knights revealed, will also likely miss the 2022-23 season due to injuries.

According to Fletcher, Ellis’s damaged psoas muscle in his back is affecting his abdominal wall, ribs, and obliques.  “This involves the psoas muscle, the hip flexors, and the adductors. I’m not convinced that fixing one issue will solve the problem altogether “remarked Fletcher.

Ryan Ellis Injury

“Something like this wound is unheard of in medical literature. Putting it simply, it’s a mess. For a hockey player, a torn psoas is a devastating injury. This is an extremely unusual injury. We’re doing everything we can, and the outcome is ultimately in the hands of the doctors.”

A surgical procedure is out of the question for Ellis, according to the Flyers. In his time with Nashville and Philadelphia, the defenseman has racked up 566 NHL games played. The plus-116 rating he achieved while playing is in addition to his 275 points. During his time, Ellis was widely regarded as one of the most underappreciated two-way defenders in the league. With a cap hit of $6.25 million, he is under contract until the 2026–27 season.

Also this week, Flyers center Sean Couturier is getting a second opinion on a back injury from a specialist. Fletcher is uncertain if he has re-injured the same area that required season-ending surgery back in February.

If Fletcher’s previous injury was any indication, this one is located in the same spot. “I have personal knowledge that he made progress throughout the summer. However, he still experienced occasional nerve pain in his glutes. It was explained to him that this was par for the course. Kept up the training. Things have gone downhill during the past week.” Fletcher has stated that it will be “a long way away” before they know if Couturier’s injury is season-ending or career-ending.
