Lyon’s interest in Feyenoord left-back Tyrell Malacia appears to be ended, according to reports from The Athletic. An agreement of up to €17 million has been reached between Manchester United and the Dutch club, with a base payment of €15 million.
A sum of €13 million upfront plus €2 million in add-ons had been agreed upon by Lyon on behalf of Malacia. It had been thought that the transaction would be completed on Tuesday; however, Manchester United’s offer outstripped the French side.
Until the personal terms are worked out, United will not be able to complete the deal. For the 2021-22 season, Malacia, a Feyenoord academy product, was a first-team regular at De Kuip, making 50 appearances across all competitions. Despite being just 22 years old, he has already played five times for the Netherlands national team.
Frenkie de Jong, Malacia’s international teammate, is also being courted by the Red Devils at this time. They have the same agency in the Netherlands. According to the Athletic, United and Barcelona are in the final stages of negotiations over a deal of roughly €65 million, with the possibility of additional compensation.
Lyon was interested in Malacia, who is represented by the same agency as De Jong. United was willing to add reinforcements at full-back and was compelled to sign Malacia. Luke Shaw will have some competition from Malacia in the near future.
Pre-season training and the presence of manager Louis van Gaal at Carrington are thought to have sped up United’s transfer activity as the pre-season tour nears. It is Ten Hag’s goal to have fresh players on board for United’s trip to Bangkok, Thailand, on July 8.
Feyenoord used Malacia in 32 Eredivisie matches last season, and he appeared in all but two of their Europa Conference League matches, including the final loss to Roma. Since his debut in September, Malacia has been a regular starter for the Netherlands in both of their recent victory over Wales.
When Alex Telles is replaced by Malacia, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Brandon Williams will be eligible to depart Manchester United.
Telles, 29, has played often since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s resignation in November, but Ten Hag and his staff do not consider him a starter at left-back.
