Crystal Palace and West Ham United are vying for the signature of Swansea City midfielder Flynn Downes, according to reports. While Palace had been the frontrunners in the race to sign Downes, Swansea had been holding out for a higher sum, which has allowed West Ham to enter the fray.
Downes, who joined Swansea from Ipswich Town in the summer of 2013 and flourished under Russell Martin, is expected to command a fee in the region of £12 million.
As a result of Palace’s long-standing interest in Downes, they are now prepared to offer £9 million-plus add-ons for the defender. If West Ham matches Palace’s price, it is expected.

Swansea City is resigned to losing Downes either way, given the Premier League and the necessity to balance the books. Former Stoke City midfielder Joe Allen, now a free agent after leaving the club this summer, has been set up to take his position.
