Pavel Zacha was acquired by the Boston Bruins on Wednesday in exchange for Erik Haula, whose contract was about to expire. As a restricted free agent, the 25-year-old will require a new deal, but the Bruins are already looking to extend his contract beyond 2022-23.
In an interview following the start of the free agency period, Boston Bruins general manager Don Sweeney explained how the team plans to use their new forward.
It’s possible that Patrice (Bergeron) and David (Krejci) both have a role to play, according to NESN’s Sweeney. When it comes to playing three positions and being productive, he’s more than capable. Furthermore, if necessary, additional personnel can be shifted around. I believe he views himself as a center, and he is looking forward to joining the Boston Bruins.
Welcome to the family! If he plays in the middle, he’s definitely going to be a center in the long run. As long as we can come up with a contract and agreement, I think that will be helpful.”
Additionally, Sweeney discussed the Bruins’ interest in Zacha, and whether or not they thought he could improve as an offensive player, in addition to his salary and fit.
This is what you aspire for when trading a player like Sweeny who was picked and has the skillset he does, according to Sweeny. For a while, he’s had the chance to play alongside stronger players than himself, however in a younger atmosphere.
Now that March has been postponed, there will be more opportunities for him to play a top-nine role for us and for power play and situational play to develop. Nevertheless, we believe Pavel has more potential, and he must seize the opportunities he is given.”
It is hard to believe that at the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, the New Jersey Devils selected Zacha, who is now 25 years old, sixth overall. With 15 goals and 21 assists, he achieved a career-high 36 points in the 2021-22 season.
