Cooper Rush

As a result of Dak Prescott’s hand injury in the season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, the Dallas Cowboys have shifted the focus back to Cooper Rush. Prescott will be sidelined “for a while,” Cowboys CEO Jerry Jones told reporters after the game, adding that the quarterback will need surgery and miss a significant amount of time. In addition, Jones mentioned that Rush will be the team’s starting moving forward.

It’s up to Cooper to take charge,” Jones remarked. “He’ll do all the work, and then we’ll see what happens.” Rush entered the game in place of Prescott and completed 7 of 13 passes for 64 yards and an interception.

Once in 2021, he stepped in for Prescott and completely outperformed everyone’s lofty expectations. In the victory over the Minnesota Vikings, he completed 24 of 40 passes for 325 yards, two scores, and one interception.

But until he establishes what he can do on a continuous basis, he may be a hazardous bet for fantasy managers. It doesn’t matter if Prescott or Rush is under center, the math for CeeDee Lamb is the same. Lamb had 153 receptions for 2,037 yards and 11 touchdowns in his first two seasons as a professional football player.

Now that Amari Cooper is no longer a distraction, the first-round pick in 2020 should see a significant uptick in his target share from Rush. Against the Vikings, Lamb grabbed six catches for 112 yards. Though, the Bucs only allowed him to catch two passes for a total of 29 yards.

It’s also a good idea to put money on Dalton Schultz to keep producing like a starting tight end. Schultz seems to be a significant beneficiary if Dallas streamlines the offense a bit for Rush and limits how frequently it expects him to make downfield throws. On Sunday, Schultz had the most receptions (seven) and the most receiving yards (62).

The picture is too uncertain to look further than Lamb and Schultz. After averaging 16.8 yards per reception in 2019, Michael Gallup will see a drop over the next two seasons due to an ACL injury.

Even before starting the season on injured reserve, James Washington had been a little contributor throughout his four years with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Jalen Tolbert, selected in the third round of the draft, shows promise but has yet to make an impact. Even with Rush as your starting quarterback, none of the three deserves to be in your starting lineup when Prescott is healthy.

Career

Cooper Rush

After starting quarterback Dak Prescott went down with an ankle injury, the Dallas Cowboys signed Rush to their practice squad to help fill in. On November 7, he was promoted to the active roster for the team’s ninth game of the season, a matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

After the game, he was sent back to the practice squad. On January 4, 2021, he signed with the Cowboys as a reserve/future player. He competed with Garrett Gilbert and Ben Dinucci and emerged as Dallas’ backup quarterback for the 2021 NFL season. With Prescott sidelined by a calf injury, the Cowboys turned to Rush as their starting quarterback for Week 8’s matchup against the Minnesota Vikings.

First career start for Rush in the NFL. He led a comeback drive that he finished by passing a score to Amari Cooper in the final minute of a 20-16 Dallas victory and finished with 325 yards passing, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception. Rush was cut by the Cowboys and signed to their practice squad on August 30 and 31, 2022.
