Yair Rodriguez Injury

UFC Fight Night in Long Island included a number of memorable moments. After attending a fun-filled event in Elmont, New York, Marc Raimondi and Jeff Wagenheim share their thoughts on what they learned.

In the wake of a dismal UFC Long Island main event, there is much to digest. To what extent does this victory by Yair Rodriguez and the injury to Brian Ortega impact the UFC Featherweight Championship? That’s something we’ll get to in due time.

Before we go any further, it’s necessary to point out that Rodriguez deserves credit on this one. Yes, Ortega’s shoulder did pop out, resulting in the TKO victory. It’s also true that this doesn’t happen in most circumstances; Rodriguez wasn’t trying to pop Ortega’s shoulder out in any particular way.

While Ortega was trying to protect himself from a submission attempt by Rodriguez, he suffered a shoulder injury in the process. An honorable triumph, indeed. When Ortega stepped the incorrect way, he didn’t harm his ankle and knee by tripping or slipping.

While battling for position with Rodriguez on the ground, he was injured and required medical attention. Even though Rodriguez was not attempting to submit or strike Ortega’s shoulder, the injury was caused by Ortega defending Rodriguez’s aggressive action.

Speaking of lightweight, Volkanovski has also discussed the possibility of taking on the title. Charles Oliveira’s fight with Islam Makhachev for the vacant lightweight title at UFC 280 in October means that that fight has to be put on the back burner. Rodriguez and Emmett might battle for the interim featherweight title before the end of the year, with Volkanovski taking on the winner early in 2023 to unify the belts.

Henry Cejudo, a two-time flyweight and bantamweight world champion who is returning from retirement, could also be a contender. However, it appears like the UFC would prefer Cejudo to return at bantamweight, rather than a featherweight.

We wish Ortega the best of luck in his rehabilitation and believe he deserved a better Saturday night. The outcome is unknown if the conflict had persisted. The battle was a toss-up until the bell sounded, but Ortega is a tough competitor in the UFC. For Rodriguez vs. Ortega 2, the UFC has to make it happen in the future if there is a method to do so. Hopefully, the venue for that matchup will be more geographically appropriate if it does happen to be.

A first-generation Mexican-American, Ortega shares Rodriguez’s heritage. When the bout might have taken place in Southern California or the Southwest in front of thousands of enthusiastic spectators, Long Island seemed like an odd choice for the location. In the words of Marc Raimondi.
