During Thursday’s doubleheader, the Astros took an early lead over the Yankees thanks to a pair of early bunt singles. Early on, they showed a little more muscle to take command of Game 2.

A three-run first inning by the Astros’ Yordan Alvarez and Alex Bregman, a two-run homer by Chas McCormick in the sixth inning, and a 7-5 victory over the Yankees by Domingo Germán secured a doubleheader sweep at Minute Maid Park for Houston.

• Matijevic’s walk-off goal gave the Astros a 3-2 victory in G1

As Bregman noted, “Our pitching staff did a great job today of keeping us in the ballgame and they threw really well to get us off to a lead. When it mattered most, McCormick’s insurance came through. We had a good day at the plate today. We’ll be back in action tomorrow after a three-day All-Star break, so there’s a little rust in there.

By defeating the Yankees for the fifth time in seven meetings, the Astros have closed the gap on the Bronx Bombers for the American League’s best record to just 2 1/2 games. And they’ve gained an advantage of 10 games on their division rivals, who will try to extend their winning streak to 14 against the Astros on Friday.

In the words of Bregman, “I think we played good baseball today. It’s going to be a long flight [Thursday night], so we’re hoping to get a good night’s sleep so that we’ll be fresh and ready to go on Friday.
