Zaniolo Injury

During Roma’s Sunday Serie A match against Juventus, Nicolo Zaniolo went down with what appeared to be a catastrophic injury in front of Roberto Mancini, Italy’s head coach.

The 20-year-old was taken off with his head down and his left leg injury after Juve defender Matthijs de Ligt fouled him on the edge of the penalty area. This happened 36 minutes into the game.

The spectacular run by Zaniolo ended when De Light, who had replaced the injured Merih Demiral, stepped out and pulled him down with a body check, earning a yellow card for the center back.

The Roma midfielder was carted off the field after writhing in pain near the box, as Mancini watched from the stands with a worried frown.

Two goals in five games for Italy indicate that Zaniolo will be an important piece for Mancini at Euro 2020. After giving up two goals in the opening 10 minutes, Roma’s situation was dire when Zaniolo was injured, down 2-0 against Juve.

Mourinho, the manager of Roma, is worried that Zaniolo may be facing a similarly lengthy absence, but he has urged his team not to wallow in self-pity. I’m worried, but that’s life, Mourinho admitted. “Weeping over it serves no useful purpose.

“You’ve obviously thought out your strategy for the game, but now you’re suddenly faced with the reality that we’re short a few players. But such is football; such things do occur, and we must press on.”

Mourinho isn’t sure if he’ll be allowed to re-enter the transfer market to find replacements. To make the best decisions for the club is what everyone wants right now, he said. “The owners and the general manager are responsible for making these calls.

“Before this, they knew precisely what I wanted, and now, with Zaniolo and Wijnaldum hurt, we face new challenges. But we’re a tight-knit group, and we’ll work together to find the best answer we can.” After beating Cremonese 1-0 thanks to a strike from Chris Smalling, Roma improved to 2-0 in Serie A.

Career

Zaniolo suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in his right knee during a 2–1 home loss to Juventus. He returned to training in late June 2020. Moreover, he received letters of support from both the Italian and global footballing community, including Roberto Mancini, Roberto Baggio, and Francesco Totti, who had previously been operated on by the same surgeon.

Although he had been set to miss the remainder of club football season and, highly likely, the upcoming UEFA Euro 2020 (before the UEFA’s March 2020 decision to postpone the tournament for a year) as well, all footballing activities in Europe were suspended by March 2020 due to COVID-19 pandemic, with club competitions rescheduled to be played behind closed doors starting since the summer.
