Zurich fires

After losing to Arsenal and Bod/Glimt in the Europa League, Swiss champion Zurich dismissed coach Franco Foda on Wednesday.

Foda was hired in June to replace title-winning coach André Breitenreiter, who left for Hoffenheim in Germany. Foda led Austria to the knockout round of last year’s European Championship.

The dismissal of Foda was justified, according to Zurich president Ancilla Canepa, by the club’s poor performance in the league and its elimination from the Swiss Cup.

After losing to Qaraba in the Champions League qualifying rounds, Canepa congratulated Foda for leading Zurich to success in the Europa League qualifying rounds. Two losses to open the Europa League group stage for Zurich; they’ll host PSV Eindhoven on October 6.

An interim coach has not been named by the team. During his four years as coach of the Austrian national team, Foda made his name with Sturm Graz. Foda left in March after Austria lost the World Cup qualifying playoffs to Wales, and in the round of 16 at Wembley Stadium, Austria fell to eventual champion Italy.
