Chelsea’s pursuit of the next Erling Haaland could get a significant boost once Todd Boehly hires a sporting director, a position for which the club has long been searching. The American tycoon is looking to strengthen the Blues’ scouting network, and he has already been prominently connected to the likes of PSG advisor Luis Campos and former Liverpool director Michael Edwards.
Christoph Freund, an official at RB Salzburg, is reportedly in talks to become the west London club’s new transfer chief, as reported by the Evening Standard. Ever since Michael Emenalo departed Chelsea in 2017, the post has been vacant; Marina Granovskaia, who resigned as a director at Stamford Bridge this summer, oversaw negotiations rather than spearheading talent identification.
According to the rumor mill, Freund, the man credited with “discovering” Erling Haaland, would be in charge of a prospective network of clubs as Boehly looks to implement a version of the Red Bull and City Group model under the Chelsea banner. The owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers spoke about his plans to end the team’s longstanding reliance on loan players at Tuesday’s SALT Conference in New York.
Having multiple clubs is something we’ve discussed, Boehly remarked. I believe that clubs can be beneficial in some countries while being unnecessary in others. The Red Bulls’ Champions League group consists of Salzburg and Leipzig. Expanding the base is something I’d like to do. There may be benefits to club membership in some nations, in my opinion.
City could have been the club that broke the British transfer record twice in the same window.
Instead, thanks in part to Dortmund, they have signed Erling Haaland AND come out of the window with a big profit.

We have a deep understanding of human resources. We are aware of the importance of strategy. We won’t pretend to be football scouts, but we will put the greatest people in position. One of Chelsea’s difficulties is that it must entrust its young superstars, aged 18–20, to other teams for development while they are on loan.
Our top priority is giving our young talent a clear path to the Chelsea field so that they can develop into future stars for the club. The way to accomplish this is to link up with a club from a highly competitive European league.
The Daily Mail has now reported that Boehly had discussed buying a Portuguese team in the summer with super agency Jorge Mendes. As the home of some of the world’s most promising young players, Liga Nos would be an ideal destination for any promising Brazilian players in the making.
Manchester City of the Premier League announced they have activated Haaland’s €60 million (£51.2 million) release clause in order to sign him. The city announced Haaland’s signing with the club on June 13, and he will officially start with the team on July 1. His contract with City will last for five years.
On 30 July, he made his debut in a competitive game, starting and playing the full 90 minutes as his team lost to Liverpool 3-1 in the 2022 FA Community Shield. He made his Premier League debut on August 7 against West Ham United and helped his team to a 2-0 road victory thanks to his two goals.
Haaland broke the record for fastest player to score two hat-tricks in the Premier League by 14 matches when he scored a hat-trick in a 4-2 win over Crystal Palace on August 27 and a perfect hat-trick in a 6-0 win over Nottingham Forest on September 1. In his first Champions League game on September 6 against Sevilla, he scored twice to become the first player to achieve 25 goals in 20 games for his team in the tournament.
