Santiago Arias Transfer

Born on January 13, 1992, Santiago Arias Naranjo is a professional footballer for the Colombia national team and plays right back. He was most recently a loan player for Granada from Atlético Madrid, and he is now a free agent.

An imminent signing of free agent Santiago Arias to Manchester United has been speculated upon this week, but at this time it is quite improbable. The Peoples Person stated that United was interested in signing the free agent, with Erik ten Hag aiming to bolster the competition for the right-back position.

The Dutchman has primarily used Diogo Dalot at right back, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka only seeing little action off the bench against Liverpool. It was speculated all summer that the Englishman would leave after the Portuguese right-back was promoted to the starting lineup.

He was listed as a substitute for United’s last game against Real Sociedad, but he was spotted in the directors’ box instead. Under interim manager Ralf Rangnick, Dalot was able to break into the starting lineup. The German coach favored the Portuguese forward more than the other options available.

As everyone can see, he is Ten Hag’s personal favorite. United has the option to extend his contract by one more year before it expires at the end of the upcoming season. After much speculation, the club ultimately did not make a bid for Sergio Dest, who instead signed with AC Milan on the transfer deadline.

A number of lawyers and agents reportedly involved in the right-decision-making backs are “not in dialogue or negotiations with the Red Devils,” as reported by Pipe Sierra through Sport Witness.

Any rumor about the Colombian international joining the club for free on a permanent basis has been called into doubt. This doesn’t mean a transfer can’t happen though, as Arias is reportedly “free to negotiate on his own” despite no club being very close to signing him at the moment.

After losing Ethan Laird to QPR on loan for the remainder of the season, United is in search of a replacement at the position. Those issues might be resolved if United were to acquire Arias, but that hasn’t happened yet.

As a member of the Colombia U-17 team, Arias participated in all matches (excluding the third place match, for a total of 6 appearances) and scored the first penalty in the quarterfinal penalty shootout against Turkey, helping his team advance to the semifinals.

In 2011, Arias started all one of Colombia’s nine matches in the South American Youth Championship, where his side ultimately placed sixth. In 2011, Colombia’s coach Eduardo Lara called on Arias to play in the Toulon Tournament, where he started all five of his team’s games en route to a championship.

After starting goalkeeper Camilo Ziga was injured before the 2014 World Cup qualification matches against Chile and Paraguay, Colombia called up Arias for the first time. In a 1-2 triumph over Paraguay in Asunción, he got his first start and played the full game on the road.

At the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, Arias was selected to be a part of Colombia’s final 23-man roster. He played in three games overall, all as a substitute for Colombia during the group stage. Arias made it onto the final roster for the 2015 Copa America. He made two tournament appearances, including the penalty shootout loss in which Colombia lost to Argentina, 5-4.

At the 100th Copa America, he played for the Colombian team that ultimately placed third. Arias was one of the 23 players chosen by José Peerman to represent the United States at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. When Colombia was eliminated by England in the round of 16, he started all four of his team’s matches.
