Steven Gerrard Transfer

The Premier League has approved Aston Villa’s squad list for the first half of the 2021/22 season, with room for one additional player. This list was submitted following the summer transfer window.

After the window closes, clubs must submit their squad list, which can include no more than 25 senior players (those aged 21 and up). Summer signings Boubacar Kamara, Robin Olsen, Ludwig Augustinsson, Leander Dendoncker, Jan Bednarek, Philippe Coutinho, and Diego Carlos are all part of Villa’s roster. Carlos, though, is expected to miss some time with an Achilles injury.

And then there was fullback Frederic Guilbert, who was clearly not in Steven Gerrard’s original lineup. The club has been practicing the defender with the U21 group, but he has not been selected for any games thus far.

When submitting their senior squad to the Premier League, Villa included 24 players. That means we can add another player to the roster.

Villa’s only hope is to sign a free agent before the transfer window opens again in the new year. Defenders Jason Denayer and Dan-Axel Zagadou are among the players that are now without a team.

If Villa were to make a move for either player, they would have time to add them to their roster and register them before the transfer window begins. Even if no free agents are signed before the window starts, the added room might provide the team with more options.

As a result, Villa may recruit a player in January and add him to the new squad list without having to replace an existing player in the same position. However, if the club were to recruit more than one player, it would have to either trade some of its current players or leave them off of the Premier League squad list.

The Liverpool legend was supposed to be Villa’s savior, but the dismal numbers show that he’s up against the current. They are currently averaging 16th place in the Premier League despite having a net budget of -327m. Despite Philipe Countinho’s status as a headline signing, he has not been able to replace the free-spirited playmaking that was lost when Jack Grealish moved to Manchester City.

Gerrard will be keenly aware that the team’s rallying point against Pep Guardiola’s squad needs to be more of a trigger than a single act of defiance. But the hard figures show just how difficult it is for clubs outside of Europe’s top six to break into the elite.
