One Pro Bowl running back has generated a lot of rumours and discussion as the NFL trade deadline of November 1 approaches. The San Francisco 49ers would be a logical destination for Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey, according to Senior Columnist Tim Kawakami’s latest post on The Athletic.
There’s little doubt that [head coach] Kyle Shanahan and [general manager] John Lynch are intrigued by the thought of obtaining McCaffrey, and I think McCaffrey’s camp is probably fairly interested in the potential, too,” Kawakami wrote, adding that he “checked around a bit.”
If a move of this size happened, it would be shocking to the entire league. There are, however, a number of complication factors at work. First of all, McCaffrey’s asking price is quite exorbitant. Additionally, following the recent firing of head coach Matt Rhule, the Panthers are switching to a rebuilding phase. Additionally, the team has a limited number of draught picks after investing that money in a number of transactions over the past few years, most notably the purchase of quarterbacks Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield. The Panthers would undoubtedly demand a sizable sum of draught money in exchange.
Any organisation interested in Christian McCaffrey’s talents must also take into account the terms of his contract. He has a $26 million dead cap charge for the following two seasons, according to Kawakami. Therefore, it might be in the Panthers’ best interest to reduce their claimed asking price of two first-round picks, but still, that salary is unquestionably high.
