According to Grace Raynor, DJ Uiagalelei talked about Dabo Swinney’s decision to bench him during Clemson football’s 27-21 victory against Syracuse.
Uiagalelei claimed that if she had been in Swinney’s position, she “probably” would have acted similarly.
Despite the uncertainty at quarterback, the Tigers improved to 8-0 on the year. DJ Uiagalelei completed the contest going 13-21 for 138 yards in the air. Dabo Swinney’s choice, though, was influenced by his two interceptions. Cade Klubnik had a 2-4 scoring rate in the air with little action. In the end, Klubnik oversaw a second-half rally that allowed Clemson football to maintain its perfect record.
After the game, Swinney declared that DJ Uiagalelei was still the team’s starting quarterback. He even defended his quarterback by drawing a comparison to Steph Curry.
“Well, you know, Steph Curry goes 2-for-25 occasionally.”
A post-game statement from Swinney defending DJ Uiagalelei was shared by ESPN.
Our starter is DJ. DJ is our captain. Nothing has changed there. He simply had one of those days, according to Swinney. “He missed a few plays, but [being the starter] is something he deserved. He still needs to clean up a few of his actions from today, but he will.
Though it must be comforting for Clemson to know they have a strong backup option should Uiagalelei’s difficulties continue. DJ Uiagalelei has over 1,600 throwing yards and 17 touchdowns over the whole campaign. The Clemson quarterback has also not had a lot of trouble with interceptions. Swinney and the Tigers are optimistic that his lacklustre performance against Syracuse was an anomaly.
Following their thrilling victory on Saturday, Clemson football will aim to maintain their perfect record going forward.
